Anybody on the board get into Poli Comm? It seems like there are a lot of people who wanted it but few who got in...

Did you get in? My son didn't. He applied EDI, and got into Arts & Sciences, but not Poli Comm. I suspect you'll find a lot more "rejects", as he refers to himself... since they only take about 30 freshmen.

My daughter is finishing up her freshman year as a Political Communication major and absolutely loves it!

Stressed Out Mom -- Congratulations to your daughter... if you don't mind me asking... what was her "hook" that got her into Poli Comm? My son had thought (obviously too optimistically) that his EC's were pretty good.... the best being creating & producing a bi-weekly political roundtable show... and attending the CYLC conference last year. He had all the typical stuff, too... school government, district task forces, committees, etc., etc. I guess we learned that for our small community, his stuff was pretty impressive, but in the big, real world.... not so much. Was Poli Comm admission also based on SATs? His weren't great.... just average. But you never know. Well, he'll try to reapply for soph year, and if not... GW is still a great place to be!

I really didn't know how to answer your question about her "hook", so I asked her what she thought it was. She thinks it was her essay. She's a good writer and felt it was very strongly written. Also, her SAT score was 1440 and she said that it seems like a very, very bright group of kids so she thinks a high score must be a requirement. She interviewed and felt that it went really well. Of course I'm her mother so I'm biased, but I feel that she is an all around great kid and she must have made a great impression in the interview process. As far as a "political" ec, she participated in Presidential Classroom her junior year. She said to tell your son that if he really wants to get into the Poli Comm major, he should consider taking SMPA 50 his freshman year....whatever that is.

In addition, I want to tell you that the experience my daughter has had her first year has been worth every penny. Daughter # 2 is a junior and we are going through the college search process again and I would remortgage my home and gladly pay double GW's price if she could be guaranteed the same wonderful experience. And for the record, she never considered applying to Georgetown...GW was always her #1 choice. Your son is about to embark on the most incredible time of his life....so far! Good luck!

Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have....

Stressed Out Mom: Thanks for the info.... my guess is that it was his SATs that contributed to keeping him out of SMPA... he only had a 1250. That's the hallmark of an LD -- testing not commensurate with potential. But he compensates so well! Testing is so difficult for him. I will definitely tell him to take that class your daughter recommended. He's so excited to go to GWU, to live in DC, and to get on with his life! He was in DC on a Young Judaea rally last week (the Darfur thing) and they had their planning brunch at the GW Hillel -- what a great bonus for him! My other son is a freshman, but GW won't be the right schoolf or him, he'll want more of a campus environment -- tossing a football on a quad kind of thing... but I'm hahppy to spend the money on the tuition.

Only a 1250???? I happen to think that is a wonderful score to be proud of. I hope that my D's #"s 2 and 3 score as well. Don't judge that score by this website.....but by the real world. And he did that well having a LD? Incredible. Did he like the Hillel building? I think it's beautiful. My daughter went once to break the fast but said she'll never go back...she didn't like it for whatever reason. Oh well, you can't have everything!
Oh, and she says that SMPA50 is a required class for the major, but you can take it without being in that major, unlike the other requirements. So, she said if he takes it as a freshman, that will be one less class he'll have to take. Plus she said that if he decides not to transfer in, it will still fulfill some sort of requirement towards graduation. I'm sure she'd say I just explained that incorrectly, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Hey, sorry I didn't respond right away. Yes, I did get in RD and will be attending GW. I had some very strong ec's (internships and working for nonprofits, but all centered around pr, politics, and print news), and my SAT score was very high (I'm a NMF too). I didn't interview at all, however I did hear that it was all about the essay, and that scores didn't matter that much...

That show your son did sounds incredible. I spent a lot of time talking to Professors Livingston (the director of the program) when deciding whether or not to go to GWU, and it seemed that the political portion of policomm now outweighs the communication...

If your son is still interested, he should def. take SMPA 50. It's Intro to Media & Public Affairs (hence SMPA), and you are required to have taken the class in order to apply for the major as a soph. If he would be willing to just drop in to the SMPA building and try to talk to one of the policomm profs, I'm sure he could really do a lot for his app the next time around.

Thanks for writing.... my son's SAT scores were average... he applied EDI... and we were told that he was one of the final applicants they seriously considered, but they only took 6 for SMPA from the ED pool. His essay was pretty good, I thought, but it centered around his political communications skills, mostly the show he created (and, at the risk of sounding like a boa****l mom, the show is something special). His SMPA essay was also about a political journalist -- so if you're saying that communications was less stressed in the admissions process than politics.... I see where that goes! He will definitely take SMPA 50 -- you're the 3rd person to recommend it. If he doesn't get into SMPA as a soph, he'll figure something out. He's pretty resourceful, and I know he'll make the best of the GWU experience. I'm sure you're as excited as he is to be going! Good luck!
