My D is torn - GER's do not overlap & there is little time. She's halfway thru the music but is thinking of dropping it - she's not looking forward to the remaining courses nec. for the degree. Many say a degree is not nec. anyway - it's what you know. ??? On the other hand, the school is well known for poli-sci with great internships, and she loves that too. Tho would the requirements for poli-sci also become uninteresting as she goes on?

"Tho would the requirements for poli-sci also become uninteresting as she goes on? "
Pardon me for asking, but how on earth are we- total strangers who don’t know what college your D is at- supposed to know what the requirements are or what would keep her interest???

I totally agree with menloparkmom’s post.

That said, in response to your question…:
IMHO the only people who should major in music or fine art are those who can’t imagine themselves being happy doing anything else.

What does she want to do next? If she wants to go to law school, then either degree is fine. If she wants to go to music grad school, she needs the music degree.

Many of my music major friends did not end up in music though I think most keep their hand in one way or another. Some went to med school, one went to divinity school, some went to law school…

Every major has annoying courses in my experience, but if it’s not too late to switch to poly sci and so far she likes it better, I don’t see why she shouldn’t go for it.

She’s @ Stanford, is not considering law school currently. Maybe she’ll go on in academia, or will see what else comes her way thru internships. After our last talk, she seems sure she’s dropping music, tho is having a hard time letting go (still might do a summer music internship, still plans on composing & taking lessons.) Maybe still thinking of that gap year after college to play around with music. Says the only poli-sci class she wouldn’t look forward to is stats.

If she is dropping the music major then the answer to the query in your other simultaneous thread is that she should not bother with the music TA position.

The thread I’m referring to, of course, is:

Ah! Stanford![ a place I know well, as I live next door[ literally] , hubby went there and son, who is an accomplished musician, was not impressed with the music program, I’m sad to say] ]
Their music program is not first or even second rate[ at this point] so she should have no qualms about concentrating on their Poly- Sci program. She can and should continue her love of music on her own.
