I would like to apply to some California colleges and am looking into Political Science/International Relations as possible majors, and interested in double major/minor in East Asian Studies/East Asian Language&Culture.
So I was just wondering, what are the best schools for those majors/minors in CA?
is UCLA good? USC? I think someone mentioned UC San Diego being good in those subjects but im not sure..

Thanks! =)

P.S. BTW, if anyone has any other suggestions of schools outside of CA (and not schools in DC b/c i already have those on my list..) that would be very helpful too!

What does your list currently look like so we can gauge what type of school you should add to your list.

I've taken the History of East Asia course at JHU, and it was really really good. The offer East Asian languages and cultures as both a major and minor, i believe the program itself is among top 5 in the country. I liked it a lot. IR/Poli sci is pretty good here as well.

I highly recommend UChicago for poli sci and east asian studies (top ranked in the nation actually for 2006). NYU offers a top ranked East asian studies program as well, but you should look into their IR/Poli sci program to see if it is right for you. Other than that, Good luck!

The best poli sci school in california is probably claremont mckenna. Other good LAC's are Pomana and Occidental. UCLA has a good poli sci department, but doesn't have an IR major. Berkeley is much stronger in these areas if you are looking into the UC's. UCSD is know for an amazing east asian studies graduate program and some of this definitely trickles down into their undergraduate program. USC is a strong school if you want to stay in Southern California and possibly practice law. It is not as well known outside of the region with regards to politics. Outside of DC, Johns Hopkins is outstanding (their graduate IR program is always 1 or 2), Macalaster in Minnesota is a LAC with a solid poli sci reputation. Middlebury, Tufts, and UMich are also very well respected. All these schools are very different. I just threw in a little of everything.

o and shameless plug for Georgetown. There is nothing like SFS.
