Poli sci outside DC?

Im applying to gw and american, but dont know if ill get in or be able to pay. Does anyone know about the polisci programs at umass and loyola university chicago? Also, would anyone care to recommend any other schools that do polisci/ IR well? My gpa is a 3.4/3.8 with many hard classes and my sat is a 2110, so nothig super selective.

what can your family afford? have you run the net price calculators at these schools? have you had The Talk with your parents? You named some really expensive schools; there are plenty of these. What about some less expensive schools like UMD-CP? Catholic? Ohio State? UDenver? What about Syracuse? Purdue?

My parents tell me not to worry about money, though they do expect me to carry some of the financial burden. UMass wont be a problem at all moneywise, i know that for sure.

okay, as long as you both know you can only make so much money each year, say $4K clear tops, and you can only borrow $5500 the first year, 27K total.

what did you think of my suggestions for someone with your stats?

I looked up UMD, and i feel like its a reach, same with syracuse. I know i can get into catholic, but i dont really want to go there because ive heard they take the whole “catholic” thing pretty seriously, unlike other catholic schools like loyola. But thank you so much for your input, i appreciate it!

what’s the breakdown of your 2110?

710 verbal 670 math 730 writing

you’re above the middle 50% for verbal (580-690) and below it for math (620-730) at UMD. still, you’re not asking to major in chemE, so your math score might matter less than the verbal, which is very good. Your 3.8 wtd is a little low (4.11) for UMD, so altogether I’d put you in as a match if you’re a MD or DC resident.

At Syracuse, you’re above to way above the middle 50% for all three categories. At Syracuse the avg wtd GPA is 3.6. So you’re easily a safety at Syracuse.

I think you’ve been underestimating your chances. American, UMASS, and Loyola are safeties for you. Even at GWU you are a high match/safety.

What about some matches and reaches? Do you want mid-atlantic/northeastern schools only? size?

Since schools weight differently, they are more likely to look at your UW GPA, which in this case would be a 3.4. While still not bad, I wouldn’t necessarily call something like GWU a safety. Still, I agree you can get into many of the schools you listed above.

GWU doesn’t even announce an average wtd GPA, so we cannot say anything about likelihood of GWU admission based on GPA of any kind. All we have is the middle 50 and the ECs.

I’d give a good look to Clark, which has excellent IR and PS majors as well as an innovative International Studies Stream program that takes the idea of a classical liberal arts core and reorients it with an international focus. You can take it instead of their standard liberal arts core and combine it with whatever major you choose.

It’s a definite stretch, but you’re not outside the realm of consideration for Georgetown SFS. Run the price calculator and consider it as your reach option.

Ive visited clark and loved it, will be applying and strongly considering if accepted. Thanks for your response!

Dickinson is also an excellent possibility with good study abroad and languages. You’re a match.
