Hi, so it seems that with only 26 spots left in Math 55 and my Phase2 is over a day away(22nd) it seems that i will have to waitlist the class and i was wondering if there was any fun/interesting polisci courses i could take. I'm a little confused as to what i should take because i got a 5 of us gov ap test. Help?

Depends on what you like. Pol Sci 1, Pol Sci 2, and Pol Sci 5 aren’t that hard (they require some time to read and do papers, so be prepared to work hard, but the material isn’t intellectually difficult).

Pol Sci 1 is American Politics. It’s like, a better and more comprehensive version of AP Gov. But if you got a 5 and feel as if you went to a good high school and follow American Politics in general, the material will be boring and redundant. (Though your chances for an A will be higher w/ the background information).

Pol Sci 2 (Comparative Politics), is really interesting, and it’s taught by a great professor this fall (Prof. Fish). It has A LOT of reading, but it’s interesting and worth it. You look at different countries political systems, economic systems, what factors lead to a specific regime, what factors lead to economic growth, and ethnic conflict (In a comparative framework, where you compare one case in one country with another). If you take this class, get Jody as your GSI- she’s the best. What I liked about this class is that there are NO papers! You have two midterms and finals, all in class essays, but you get the possible prompts like 3-4 days a head of time! So that gives you plenty of time to prepare (I wrote out my essays and memorized them before the test)

Pol Sci 5 is international relations. It revolves around how countries deal with each other. The first third of the course is VERY theoretical, so idk if that’s your cup of tea. But after that, it gets super interesting, and is pretty damn relevant to today. We look at United Nations, International Criminal Court, IMF, ect. Gurowitz is a very fast speaker, so you need a laptop to keep up during the class. Tests and papers aren’t too hard. Reading is less than both Pol Sci 1 and Pol Sci 2, and tests are based solely on lectures.
