I hear that there is a police officer in the lobby of the freshmen commons every night after 8PM checking student IDs to ensure safety. How does this affect the night-life for freshman, and how strict are the police officers?

It’s not a police officer, it’s a rent-a-cop. And they are not in all dorms, just the bigger ones, at least that’s where they were two years ago. You just flash them your vandy ID and keep walking. Makes no difference how drunk you are. RA’s are the only ones who will actually get you in trouble in a dorm, but most don’t care. Just keep your door locked and don’t be too loud when drinking. On greek row, you’ll never get in trouble for drinking unless you’re passed out or being destructive in public.

Some of the rent-a-cops are actually pretty friendly.

Don’t worry about being drunk in the commons. You’ll learn that the workers don’t care if you’re drunk, they generally just laugh at you or something. And there is a security woman, but she doesn’t do much. That’s why i love vandy, the understand college kids will be college kids.

Yeah, just don’t carry a handle openly across Commons and you’ll be fine. The only instances I’ve ever heard of are often power-hungry RAs who write people up. My RA was a great guy though, and while he didn’t want us openly drinking in the Commons, he didn’t really care what we did in the room, as long as we were low-key.

But yeah, I’ve seen someone walk up to the Munchie Mart completely high, and the guy just laughed and said, “Mayne, you on dat loud ****.” Hahaha.

the only dorm I know of that has a cop/security guard is Hank Ingram. and honestly as long as you have a student ID it doesn’t really matter what state you’re in. be much more concerned about your RA - I had a lot of friends on probation due to being written up for alcohol offenses in the commons.
