I am interested in majoring in PoliSci in the subfield of International Relations, and I don't know much about the department at Rice. Does anyone know anything about how strong the PoliSci department is at Rice?

I was also wondering if anyone knows anything about the Policy studies major? Many of the areas of study seem pretty interesting as well.

I live close to Rice have gone to camps at Rice, I don’t think political science at Rice is particularly strong, but it’s not that bad either. Rice is strong in Biomedical Engineering, all other types of engineering, and the sciences.

Hey, NYskins, what’s the situation with the Baker Institute and Rice undergraduates–are students able to intern and/or do research there? And also, is it something that’s pretty accessible to all students, or competitive + selective.

Political Science is strong at Rice – with some superb profs who find the time to forge ties with students who show strong interest. Also, Sociology is particularly vital at Rice – with a team of nationally respected profs and ample paid on campus research opps – and strong grad school placement.

Establishing close ties with profs provides additional enlightenment for students – and often leads to strong recommendations for summer internships, grad school/professional school apps, as well as paid research jobs on campus.

Reach out to a prof who interests you during office hours, after classes and benefit from the collaborative spirit that abounds on campus.

I’ve heard praise for Doc C, Ambler, Stein, (can’t remember other names at the moment) who connect especially well with enthusiastic students. Double majoring is very common – my son has mentioned many poli sci and econ/sociology/math double majors and also pre meds who are majoring in poli sci. You might want to explore the website to to see what it takes to make President’s s List each term (top 30%) – I would guess many are pre meds and double majors …
