Would volunteering for a political campaign look good for volunteer work or look bad because its politics?...I was thinking about volunteering in the Obama campaign....

I hate people always ask these type of questions. DO what YOU want to do. Colleges want to see your true passion not what you think will make you look better.

If you truly want to go into politics go for it. If you are just doing it for show don't bother.

sorry i really would like to do it but i was wondering if if would cause more damage than good on an app

It depends on what school you are applying to. At a school like Vanderbilt or Liberty, your chances will drop if you support a populist candidate.

Probably the case at Liberty, but I doubt Vanderbilt will care one way or another who you support--doesn't it add to "diversity"?

lol, yes the irony. That post was a while ago. I have learned a lot since that post and I am simply passing my knowledge gained to other people. Thank you for stalking me.

yeah, almost 5 weeks ago

"I hate people always ask these type of questions."

Interesting

No offense but supporting a political candidate does not decrease or increase your chances at a particular school. Not even Vandy. Political affiliation is not a criteria the admission officers look at. Sure, your political views would contribute to the college but it's not a factor taken hugely into account. If it was, then the process would just be discriminatory.

Again, like some of the posters said, do what you want to do. I've worked for the ACLU and it's not like that made my application look more respectable to the admissions officers.

Can this thread get stickied for being hilarious? I still can't stop laughing whenever I read through it.

Political campaigns offer great opportunities for young folks to gain great experience (try going door-to-door for a blue candidate in a red state). For a self-starter, motivated individual you will find lots of places to gain leadership. It can also be a place to hang with very smart articulate involved people. It is a field that has endless volunteer opportunites - there is ALWAYS another election (local, state, national) coming up.

Colleges are looking for involved individuals and political activism is an important part of campus life. You do the math.

Will a one-shot volunteer gig help you? Probably not. Will a track record of meaningful involvement in the political process help you? Absolutely!

Or for a blue candidate in any state. Go ahead and try a red candidate too as long as it's not a swing state in which you could have any impact in the decision. =) <---I hate these, but I'll use one anyway

Of course it is a good EC, especially if you are really involved and learn a lot from the experience. It is also good if you plan to major in political science or desire a career in politics, activism, public services or with charitable organizations. Learning liberal is probably better also when it comes to most higher eduacation institutions. If you write essays on the topic, stress the importance of helping the community and the overall learning experience rather than spouting partisan dogma.

depending on what college you apply to, it can make a big difference if you're supporting a republican, democrat, or other candidate. all the colleges that i'm planning to apply to probably would not look highly upon someone who campaigned for a republican. not that i'm liberal or anything (libertarian actually).
