Political Climate

Hey guys,

So I’m considering attending UCSC in the fall of 2015, but I am concerned with the stereotypes I have heard. I am from SoCal, and I pretty conservative politically (fiscally conservative, not as conservative on social issues, but not completely liberal). Though I do like politics, it is not my focus in college as I would be attending UCSC as a TIM (Technology Information Management) major. I have heard the stereotype of UCSC students that they are all hippie radicals, but I don’t know what to believe. My question is if I attend, will I be outcasted just because I am conservative? I’m going to visit the campus over spring break, and I hope I like it because I heard Santa Cruz is a beautiful area.

As someone who attended years ago, and who has a daughter applying to UCSC, no Sirlaz, you will not be an outcast. The UC’s are getting very competitive, and so lots of different people from many backgrounds and political persuasions will arrive in the Fall, hoping to get a great education, regardless of political affiliation.

There are tie-die wearing kids playing hackey sac at every university I’ve ever walked.

I’d encourage you to tour the campus when school is in session and get the feel for yourself. Ask some students what they think and how they like it. The school is competitive enough of sufficient size so you are bound to find some like minded people.
