Political involvement

I'm an active republican, with many volunteer hours. However I'm unsure whether putting this on a college app to a historically liberal school would hurt my chances, like brown or Harvard. Will this hurt or help me If I put it down?

It won’t hurt you.

It’s helpful inasmuch as it shows you’ve done something constructive with your time outside school. It won’t be more helpful than volunteering for Democratic causes, or playing tennis, or competing in Irish dance, or any other productive use of your out-of-class time, but it won’t hurt you in the slightest.

It’ll help, especially if politics is a passion of yours. If your extra-curricular activities are focused in one area, it’ll show commitment, which is better than a bunch of random ECs in unrelated areas.

Most colleges are areas where people gather to discuss change and perhaps progress. This is taken by some to be extremely liberal. This is also taken by some to mean these schools are populated by people with bias against conservatives.

I’m moderate-conservative but do not hold that belief of these schools are biased against non-liberals. I certainly saw a very open and diverse student body at my HYP alma mater. Frankly, I think the “pinko ivy” theme is a straw man and it irks me. You’ll do fine to put down your political work.
