Political/Law Themed Application -- Yale, Princeton, Georgetown

Hey, thanks for reading this. I really appreciate any insight you can give me. I'm currently a Junior, and my "theme" of sorts is political action and law. I have somewhat of a hook -- I am a member of a very small, selective Mock Trial team that was ranked second in the nation last year. I have numerous activities that generally revolve around politics and activism.

This is what I think may best serve as a hook. For those who don't know what it is, Mock Trial is a highly competitive organization in which students portray attorneys and witnesses in a simulated trial. It requires analytical thinking, constant adaptation, oratorical skills, and a legal mind. It is a very selective, small organization, and we have been very successful. We practice for about 13 hours a week. It is something that I am truly passionate about and will highlight on my application.

Citizen Club (9th - Present)
-Vice-President
-Organized Large Charity Movement for Haiti

This plays two parts into my application: politics and community service. I am vice-president for a club which focuses on bringing political knowledge to the student body. I also ran a massive fundraiser last year which (combined with other efforts), raised over 10,000 dollars.

** Political Columnist and Writer **(9th-Present)

This goes into the politics section. I have run my own column in the school newspaper since Sophomore year in which I argue with an opposing columnist. I also personally introduced a new section in which I collaborated with my opponent to write a non-partisan column about a current event or issue so that students can make informed decisions.

Political Intern for Senate Candidate (Summer 2010)

I pursued my passion for politics by spending by summer as an intern for the campaign of a winning Senatorial candidate in my state. I gained dozens of hours of experience working for this campaign, and it was a great overall experience.

Business Club (9th-Present)
-Position on Executive Board
-First Place, District (2009)
-State Finalist (2010)
-First Place, District (2011)

I have been heavily involved in this competitive club which highlights strategies in the business world. I have also been a part of the executive board.

Ladder Up - Financial Liberation (8th-Present)

I am now in my fourth year of volunteering for this organization. During tax season, I spend nearly all my Saturday mornings serving as an administrative assistant for this charity which does tax returns for the poor. I am trusted with extremely sensitive information such as W-2's, social security information, and other tax documents. I really enjoy my work here, and it has truly allowed me to meet amazing people.

Questions for you guys!

First, what do you think my chances are at schools like Yale and Princeton?

How does my political "theme" come across?

Should I re-take the SAT?

How badly will the 710 Chem hurt me?

Any other comments?

How competitive do you think my application will be?

Thanks so much. Let me know if you want me to chance you back!

wow thats one hell of an impressive profile…

HYP are reaches for everyone… the admission process is very unpredictable but I’d say you have a good shot at those

Unique

Your scores are good enough for all the colleges

Do well on the other subject test and you should be fine… above 700 works

Good Luck!

Chance back

i’m pretty sure you’re set. 2nd in the nation is uber good, though I am not familiar with the system… but then again you only practice 13hrs/week… uh… retake a 2330?.. i would advise not to. the 710 in chem is pretty low, but i dont see its making a real impact on anything.

Thanks a ton.

Do you think anyone could give some comment on my chances at some specific schools on my list?

Yale Reach/Match

Notre Dame In

;)

Thanks. Why do you think that Princeton is not a match?

Wow. SPEECHLESS. If you don’t get into at least half of these places, I’ll be surprised.

Yale reach
Princeton reach
Georgetown MATCH
WashU IN
Claremont McKenna MATCH
Brown reach
University of Chicago MATCH

The “reaches” I mentioned are reaches for everyone, but less so for you.

Chance back.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1085896-insert-attractive-interesting-title-here-promise-chance-you-back.html

Your profile is very similar to this one senior, who had a 2300+ SAT, 4.0 GPA, very high rank, law-themed ECs, and similar college list. He got deferred to Yale SCEA, but everyone in the school thinks he got robbed. Your profile is, and I can’t believe I’m going to ever say this, a significant notch above his.

Finish the year strong, apply to Yale SCEA, as I assume you’re doing, and cross your fingers, because even though I’ll still say reach for Yale and Princeton, you’ve got a very, very nice shot.

Don’t retake SATs, and the 710 in Chem will not kill you. You’re very, very competitive for just about every school in this country.

I’m not sure if I should apply SCEA to Yale. From the data, it doesn’t seem to help and it could cost be my ability to do early action elsewhere.

What do you guys think?

bump 10 char

ur gon get in e’rrywher

Okay with SCEA-- just do it. Truth of the matter is that admittance rates are about the same but if you are confident in your application submit by Nov 1 and you’ll know by Dec 15. Honestly, by the time November comes around you will be anxious to know where you’ll be going to college and waiting until December is a lot better than waiting until April. And no, I’m not telling you to do it to have a senior slide-- I’m certainly not doing that even though I was already accepted into my #1 choice school-- but it is so relieving to hear back from your dream school. Plus, you’re a very competitive applicant. Write a solid essay and have a good interview and I think you’ll position yourself into even better stance. As others have mentioned HYP is a reach for everyone but you can do it! Good luck!
