Political Science& Governement Competitions/Awards

You guys know of any debate, mock trial, model un, national…olympiad that are related to politics. any ideas will help. I am more interested in learning about awards for government and politics. For instance, u have Intel Science Search, what do political buffs have?

None that I'm aware of; but I interned with my assemblymember and earned letters of commendation from the governor, speaker to the Assembly, Senate President Pro Tempore, and the list goes on.

Excelling in debate (policy or LD) and being ranked at the state- or national-level will certainly help during college admissions. The top five debaters in the country are usually accepted at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other Ivy League schools. In addition to debate, there are several speech categories in Speech & Debate. I know several of the top 20 students in the nation in each of these categories and many have been accepted by Harvard and other Ivy League schools.

I wouldn't quite agree with audioslave XD... The top debaters as recognized by the national debate community aren't necessarily HPYS attendees - the TOC champion two years ago in LD went to UCLA, the TOC champion last year's at Northwestern... And alot of the National Forensic League top-notch speakers go somewhere in Kentucky that recruits heavily...

There's really no way around the fact that in speech and debate, mock trial, etc, there's nothing more you can do except win win win though. XP

cynathis: I didn't form my opinion based on the TOC, I based my statement on the NFL National Tournament results. The 5th best policy debate team at the 2004 NFL National Tournament consisted of two students, one went to Harvard, the other went to UC Berkeley. The winner of the 2004 NFL National Tournament in LD is going to Harvard, and the runner-up is going to Stanford (accepted by Columbia, UPenn). The 2nd place LD speaker at the NFL National Tournament went to Yale. Three speakers, I personally know, who placed in the top 30 in the country for a speech category at the 2004 NFL National Tournament were accepted at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. Many other debaters, who excelled both at the NFL National Tournament and excelled in academics, ended up at HYPS. The list goes on...

I'm a state winner debator (Forensics) you could say.

there's also policy forum, working with local politics groups, and writing editorials for school paper if you are into that sort of thing
