Political Science Major Transition to Teacher?

Is there any way to receive a major in Political Science and pursue a graduate degree in education? One of my possible college routes involves getting those two degrees and becoming an American Government teacher in high school.

Take a look at the State Ed Dept website, under “teacher credentials” or something similar.

But let me warn you: the odds are overwhelming that you won’t be able to apply for jobs as an “American Government” teacher. The odds are much greater that your credential will be something like “Social Studies 7-12.” So you may very well end up teaching Global Studies or European History.

Also, know that the job market in Social Studies education is very tight-- you may want to think in terms of what you can do to make your resume more competitive. For example, if you could get some experience coaching Model UN or Model Congress or Speech & Debate while still in college, it would help to set your application apart from the others in a very large stack.

You could always get a masters in education. But check your states requirements. If you do decide to Persue it try to get dual certifications like special Ed and secondary education history.
