I am deciding whether to major in political science or history at the University of Florida and was looking for some practical advice/insight into what these two programs are like. Any information on class quality, professors/TA's, internship opportunities, or rigor of the programs is greatly appreciated!

Both are popular and pretty large, but I’d say from observation that political science is a massively common major. Does that make it better or worse? I am not sure. I know people get political science internships, and a lot of people seem to enjoy it. I am not sure of the difficulty (that will depend on your interests).

My personal advice is to consider majoring in both as a double major student. You’ll easily have the space in your schedule, anyway, and you’ll have to fill it with something. And yes, a lot of students double major. Poli Sci/History, as well as Poli Sci/Econ, are common combos.

If I had to choose one, I’d choose political science because it’s slightly more practical than history. Political science here seems pretty robust from my perspective (I am a business student). I am a little biased, though, because I like it more. I guess you won’t truly know until you take an intro class of each subject and see how you like them. You can visit the respective offices or try to ask around once you get here as to what students think of each department or get a vibe.

On the other hand, I think it will largely come down the subject of which you are willing to write thousands of words about since both departments are respectable. The subject you enjoy more you will be able to earn higher grades in.

Regardless of which major you choose, you must take prof. Samuel Stafford as many times as possible. Hands down the best professor, or teacher for that matter, I have ever had. All are poly sci classes but will help with history a well.
