Political Science Vs. International Relations

I was admitted as an ED 2 applicant. I applied to the Columbian College because that's where the Political Science major is facilitated, and at the time I was positive that I wanted to major in PS. Now I'm having second thoughts..i think IR caters more toward my interests. Both programs are really prestigous; the GW PS website says the PS program is in the top 20 in the nation..and it's a given that the Elliott School is really well respected in the diplomatic community. Does anyone know if it is easy to transfer from Columbian to Elliot? Which is a stronger at GW, the Political Science BA through Columbian or an IR BA through Elliott? I'd really appreciate any help or w\e

thanks

Honestly your career options are not going to change that much between those two majors. If you think that you are more inclined to the IR side, I would definitely go with that. Also, IR gives you all of the PS career options plus a TON more. Basically every industry has some use for IR majors. Personally, I am currently planning on double majoring in IR and French and then going to grad school and eventually a career in International advertising.

Cool thanks..I think I', def. going to try to switch to the Elliot School for IR

A transfer to Elliott is very very very difficult, not impossible, but because so many kids apply to Elliott it is best to do so up front, which can also get you flat out rejected from the university. You would have to provide a rather compelling arguement to Dr. Napper, Dean of Admissions, for her to change your school. But all you can do is try and honestly if you get into Elliott, it provides you with a great deal of flexibilty as travelgirl said more so than in CCAS.

Oy, that makes me nercous. The more I hear about the Elliott School the more I regret to applying to it. I'm happy as a poly sci major though.

thanks

To apply into Elliott as a current student (internal transferring), you have to complete a list of requirements. They're listed at http://www.gwu.edu/~elliott/news/releases/esia_transfer_policy.html. Basically, you have to have 24 credits under your belt at GW, have at least a 3.0 and have completed the listed courses. Be happy as a poli sci major, but work hard to transfer into Elliott.

Something I forgot. If you are certain that you intend to transfer to the Elliott School, you should schedule and complete the GCRs listed under the Elliott School. So you don't transfer with extra courses that will only be counted as electives. For example, the Elliott School has a math OR science requirement whereas the Columbian College requires BOTH math and science.
