I really work in a position as a sort of political consultant or analyst. I am considering majoring in political science but I don't particularly want to be asking people if they want fries with that. Is a degree in political science even necessary or would a degree such as economics with a minor in history equally prepare me for the field?

what do you want to consult about or analyze? domestic issues? federal government policies? state government policies? policies of foreign governments? social issues? budget issues? US foreign policy?

Political science is a general field that teaches you how to read, write, synthesize information, analyze information, etc. A poli sci degree likely has an economic component to it. As an example, my IR degree had at least 4 econ classes.

An econ degree will place you better for economic analysis, but worse if you really wanted to work on social issues.

You can always get a more specific graduate degree to fine tune your interests, knowledge, and depth. My undergrad is in IR and my master’s is security studies-esque. So, my graduate degree is taking me farther away from something like the World Bank or Foreign Service, and closer to the Defense sector.
