I've just finished my sophomore year and I am planning to major either in poli science or business. How strong is the poli science department at UPenn? and how does it compare to the poli science departments at cornell and columbia?

The second question I have is that how hard is it to get into CAS as compared to wharton? and Is there a possibility that I can obtain a BA in poli science and BS in Economics, I know about the Huntsman Program and many other dual degrees but I've heard that Upenn gives u a lot of freedom in desiging ur own path :P

Ill answer your second question, I don't really know about the 1st.

It is harder to get into Wharton than CAS. How much harder? Im not exactly sure, but there is a difference. The Hunstman program is for Intl studies so I'm not sure if you can do poli sci with that, and its harder to get into than wharton itself - i think the program is just 40 or so people. I

If you want to double major in arts/business then you are best off applying to wharton (which is harder to get in to) and then adding on a major in CAS (which shouldnt be too bad). If you do the opposite, then you need to apply to wharton for a major and u need a 3.8something, which is hard to get. If you really want to be at Penn and don't really care so much about doing the business, you are better off applying to CAS because you will have a better chance of acceptance.

The poli sci department is legit, allot of good professors (I'm taking a class with Gov. Ed Rendell as my professor in the fall called "Who gets elected and Why") and allot of opportunities graduating from it. I know I liked it better than Cornell's department as I talked to the head of it when I was accepted and considered going there, although I can't speak for Columbia because I really don't know much about their departments.

I actually registered here just to answer your question because I'm actually in the Huntsman Program and am picking up a 3rd major in Poli Sci. It's not hard at all to because allot of the International Studies and Wharton requirements and can be used to double count towards a degree in Poli Sci, so all in all I actually only have to take 4 extra classes to get the 3rd major in poli sci than what I already have to take to get the IS and Econ degrees. and If you don't happen to get into Huntsman (write a good essay; thats what got me in), and just get accepted into Wharton you have substantial freedom within your curriculum to pick up a major in Poli Sci--or anything else for that matter.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your college apps--I hated them :/.
