Politically, which school has the best balance between liberals and conservatives?

^^^ Oops . . . that’s the U. of Washington in Seattle; Wash U is listed in the “left” category. BTW, I’m citing a 2006 edition, but I wouldn’t expect this kind of aspect to change very significantly in a few years.

Here is the “right” list":

Berea
Boston College
CWRU
Colgate
Duke
Furman
Georgetown
Georgia Tech
Hamilton
Holy Cross
Lehigh
Morehouse
Notre Dame
Princeton
Southern Cal
Vanderbilt
UVA
Wabash
Wake Forest
Washington & Lee

^^^Imagine Catholic schools leaning right? I for one am shocked!

Princeton has great balance and dialogue.

i really dont think notre dame is very moderate. my friend who goes to school there says he was surprised how conservative it was. he knew it wasnt very liberal, but he said that nd is quite a bit more conservative than liberal.

I suspect the lists cited by gadad are mostly bunk. Duke hardly leans right – the last survey (2007) put the campus as 36.3% liberal, 36.7% moderate, 22.2% conservative, and 4.80% radical. The campus has grown more liberal since then, or at least it seemed that way to me.

I don’t have such statistics for Wake Forest, but with 75% in favor of abortion, 80% in favor of legal marijuana, and 80% in favor of gay marriage, it’s hardly a bastion of conservatism either.

Kwu is correct; the vast majority of top colleges lean left. I’d move several of gadad’s moderate schools into the right category (Dartmouth, Stanford, Harvard, UNC, Yale, etc.) and most of the right schools into the moderate category except maybe Berea, Morehouse, and Wabash.

I’m not sure that I’m willing to trust any opinion stating that ND is conservative.

Catholicism requires social conservatism, but most “Catholics” do not follow the official teaching, especially at places like Georgetown. Notre Dame is better, but real conservatism is found at places like BYU and smaller Catholic colleges.

UNC is about as liberal as it gets in the south. Seriously-as a conservative the amount of liberal ******** that people like me have to put up with on that campus is somewhat ridiculous.

Again, the political views of Catholics closely match the political views of the population as a whole. I think there’s a sort of curve here when grading schools as “left” or “right” because your average university is liberal. Its much more likely schools like Vanderbilt and Notre Dame and Duke are moderate than are truly conservative.

Do you really think schools like Yale and Harvard and Stanford are going to be Conservative? I just don’t understand that. Young people as a whole are extremely liberal compared to the general population. The top Ivies are generally attracting kids of all races from all demographics, so you’d think the political views of the College would reflect the political views of youth.

Having a strong Conservative group does not make the school right-leaning. That requires a strong Conservative group and a weak Liberal one, and I can’t imagine too many Universities having that.

Duke, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Colgate, Bucknell, Bowdoin.

Agreed, though I like the atmosphere. I figure this is pretty obvious given my statement about the top schools being liberal, but I mistyped – those colleges belong in the left, not right, category.

Thanks, gadad! I appreciate your taking the time to type the list. Big help to us.

What is “radical”? Socially liberal, fiscally conservative, but not libertarian?..

Radical is “let’s blow everything up”, lol. Yeah, that is a good question as to how they defined “radical”.

I am rather suprised at Princeton coming in as conservative. Given that others have shown the ratings seem off, maybe it is too, but I would have thought it was at least split, if not liberal.

chsow,

You said: “Notre Dame is liberal in terms of Catholic schools, which is to say led by Jesuits and so willing to hear all sides.”

ND is not Jesuit, it is run by the Order of the Holy Cross. Boston College annd Georgetown are Jesuit, and they are notably more liberal then ND.
