politician rec.-- not "he's friends with my dad" type thing

So, I've been working with a congressman on service/ government projects for the last two years. Would it help to get a rec from him? I've heard that it's a mbad idea to do that in the past--it just looks like name-dropping-- but I'm thinking it might be different if we actually worked together in an activity?

If you think he would have something valuable and unique to add to your application, then I say go for it. But if he's not really going to say anything different from what your teachers say in their recommendations, or if he's not going to bring to light a different side of you, then I don't think it's worth it.

It sounds like you have enough reason to request a recommendation just based on the activity aspect of your relationship. However, it should also be enlightening (obviously). If you choose to ask him for a recommendation, then also make sure that you ask him to emphasize some new personality trait or attribute that will add another dimension to your application.
