Politics and admission

is it risky to use political examples or references in ones admission essays? how do individual brown applicants associate politically for this years class?

I'd advise against being too political in an essay. You never know who's going to be reading it. On the other hand, what do I know?

politics is usually one of hte hot topics to stay away from -- besides, the essay is supposed to be about YOU

well if one is inherently political, politics would be a legitimate aspect of an about me section correct?

Legitimate, maybe. Risky--most definitely! As I said before, you never know who will be reading your essay. Better not to risk putting them off in any way. Just my humble opinion.

you make a good point, however in my opinion to gain admission to these rediculously excusive schools a risk needs to be taken in order to make you really stand out. time will tell if it pays off

If you talk about how politics effect you, it's okay, but if you're just espousing your opinion, you're not sharing part of yourself.

Rachel is right. It's not that politics is off-limits, it's highly unlikely that your politics will have any affect on admissions. The problem is talking about politics it's easy to lose oneself and never make it to talking about who you are and just writing what you think. Can you be more specific?

it depends on how your point can be taken;

my major mistake on EA was putting about my experience of living in NJ and it smelling like rotten eggs near Trenton;

mistake x2 was telling that to my interviewer;
mistake x3 was saying that that wasn't exactly a bad thing;

it was a circle of madness and mistakes.
so, it's up to you.
