Are majors at MIT like Politics and Philosophy as recognized as the ones it specializes in (engineering, mathematics, etc.)? It being one of the highest-ranked universities in the U.S., one would be inclined to think so, but are its majors in the social science field of the same standard as those from Harvard or Yale?

The political science program is outstanding – always ranked in the top several – as are linguistics, economics, philosophy, and a few others. The humanities departments are not generally top-ranked, but they are small departments with strong faculty and small class sizes.

MIT is not Harvard or Yale, but it certainly has strengths outside science and engineering.

Our Economics department is one of the most highly ranked in the nation (#1 in graduate studes), and any school with Noam Chomsky can’t be that badly ranked ;)
