Hi, I’m a prospective freshman for next fall and was wondering about the political majors they have. I see that there’s no general poli-sci major and rather theres are specific political courses. I am looking into corporate law as of now so I intend to go for a political major. However, I’m not 100% sure about that track so I’m also looking a lot into the biochemistry program. So for the political majors, which one would be best for me?
I suggest also looking at the Batten School of Public Policy. It has competitive admissions, but you don’t apply until your second year. It has smaller classes and easier registration for classes that UVa’s Politics Dept. and has a more applied and analytical emphasis that is separate from the typical study of elections. I believe it would be good preparation for law school.
Any student can also take the first 3 Commerce School classes without having to be accepted into the Comm School, which would be helpful for corporate law.
There are four majors in the College that would be of interest:

You have two years to declare a major in the College of Arts and Sciences, so there is plenty of time to explore your options and determine the right path.
I’m thinking of selecting government on my common app right now. Will the one i select affect my chances in any way?
Dean J recently wrote that the major you list on your application will not affect your admission. Many students change their intended major after the first few months. You will be competing against other in-state applicants for the College of Arts and Sciences, or other out of state applicants for the College.
