POLL: Class of 2011 - Most Selective Ever?

In each of the next 2 years, the number of HS grads is projected to increase over 2% each year.

<a href="http://nces.ed.gov/programs/projections/TableDisplay.asp?id=tab_23.asp%5B/url%5D">http://nces.ed.gov/programs/projections/TableDisplay.asp?id=tab_23.asp</a></p>

Even though not all grads are college-bound, that's a huge increase by historical standards. Add the increase in multiple applications, and I'm guessing that any admissions dean who doesn't see an increase in apps will be doing some soul searching.

2012= full of gays. literally.

you know...as single entities, theres really no way for ONE person to substantiate all the claims on this thread...we cant just say "2011 is better" or "2012 is lazy", because it differs from school to school...we need the statistics

At my school, my class is definately the most competitive (hs class of 2007, college class of 2011...hey, that rhymed) of the classes I've seen throughout high school. The current juniors are just.....not hard workers. It's odd. So yeah, based on my experiences, I think this is the most competitive class in a while. Students in the classes below me seem to not care as much.

2007 here may be the last competitive class we will have, as 2008 has only a few standouts, and below that there is little to offer. However, 2016 has a very large number of Asians, so it might be really ugly if all of them matriculate to high school.

I always thought that since we're the kids of the baby boomers, there will be excessive competition.

From what I've read, less and less people are having kids. I wonder if college will become much less competitive in the next 10-15 years...

Should we let average SAT scores dicate competitiveness???

I know SATs aren't everything but, I'd like to see the average SAT scores of the Class of '11 compared with Class of '10.

so do you guys think this year admissions to college will be more competitive camparing to last years? in the other words will the acceptance rate going to decrease?

class of 2010 a incredibly smart and competitie and active...... but my class (2011) is not that competitive at all, and not even academically good.... escept for some students.... hahaha

In my High School, my class is the most smartest and academically strongest compared to the past couple graduating classes and the upcoming classes. I know a lot more people than usualy are going to be going to top schools this year from my grade.

"most smartest"

right...

jajjaja, good one

SAT are meant to stay releatively the same from year to year, thats the point of a standardized normally distributed test. They decreased with the introduction of the new format, but that doesn't mean the students were weaker--chance are they were a little stronger due to slightly higher IQs and slightly better schools. Scores from here on out should slowly increase but it'll take some time to hit the highs from the old test. And who knows the CEEB might be more vigorous in recentering, who knows!

The class of 2011 (my class) is definitely the most competitive that I've seen. I don't know too much about the classes before and after us, and the class of '10 did send ~5 people to Ivies last year (out of 800 something, in a very diverse public school), but I didn't get the same feeling of academic rigor from them that I do from my friends and the people in my class. And the junior class....they're just crazy.

I agree, also, that this has to do with increasing numbers of people applying to reach schools just because they want to, or they can pay the application fee.

Class of 2011 is DEFINATELY the most competitive. Well, at least in my town, this is true.

We are nearing the tail end of the baby boomer's kids. I predict several years from now, it'll get less intense (especially if immigration declines). As for next year? Probably bigger.

What a stupid topic in general. "Well, from my anecdotal evidence from my experiences at my one school out of thousands, I say that the class of 2011 will totally suck at admissions yet 2012 will be amazing!"

Or, maybe, the amount of applicants to high end schools will continue to rise no matter what as it follows the trend of the past however many years and therefore admissions rates will continue to decrease as well.

For the third time in four years, Yale will once again be the most selective university in the country.

Hmm, are we speaking of the high school graduating class of 2011? If so then these are the current 8th graders. from what I have read, the peak number of college apps will be 2008. Then it will begin to drop slowly.

going Ivy will increasingly be harder to get into as years come. when we're 100, the admissions rate will be less than 1% if the US is still around in its present form

Obviously, SAT scores will be more accounted for, as the class of '10 was treated more leniently since they were the guinea pigs.
