For me, I started out the year in this mindset; I joined 4-5 clubs and started swimming again (I quit but joined again this year). However, now I actually enjoy those clubs and love swimming, so I'm happy that I did this. But I'm not doing any more crap "for college"

Usually not. Almost all of my ECs are things that I already want to do and love. Sometimes I’ll realize that they’ll look nice on a college app, but that’s just a bonus.
The only exception is being the 2nd period representative for my class. It’s technically part of student government, although a very small part. But I also get to miss 2nd period for meetings every now and then, which is nice. =)

Personally, I’m involved in extracurriculars that I actually enjoy although conveniently they also look good on a college application ;). I wouldn’t be able to stand doing an EC that I hate just to get into a college.

I had a huge crush on this one girl a few years ago. I was about to ask her out when I found out that having a girlfriend is not an acceptable EC for top colleges :/

Fortunately, I was able to better utilize my time being passionate about some club.

Eh, I’ve started two things with that as a consideration, but I still wanted to do them. One of those two things became the activity I’m most active in right now.

And SriMuppidi, some people really do like that stuff, you know. I volunteer for a no-kill rescue service for cats, and I really do enjoy taking care of the cats up at PETCO once a week. It’s really nice to be able to make a difference even if it’s just for a bunch of cats.

And I still did symphonic band, tennis (no 1 doubles), sports editor of newspaper, class treasurer & athletics commissioner and nhs all in the same year. … .
