Unfortunately for McCain, he looks ineffectual now. At the very least, as several papers are reporting or opining on their op-ed pages, it really calls into question McCain’s judgement. These are not the stories he want circulating the day after Fred Thompson got up at the convention and talked about what he suffered as a POW.

This is not the way many of his loyalists see it. It could be that (perhaps most) people made up their minds, and are now interpreting the events (on both sides) in ways that justify their opinions.</p>
