^^ that's crazy. When I applied to undergrad, I only applied to 3. For those who ask why.... because I had NO CLUE what I was doing and no help from parents, teachers, or counselors with the admissions process. Now that I'm applying for grad school, I think I'm applying to 7.

I'm applying in 2 waves. The first has one ED school (reach) , one EA school (safety), and one with rolling admission that I just want to get done with (safety). If I don't get into my ED school, then I'll apply to 6 or 7 more schools.

So, best case scenario, 3 schools: 1 reach, 2 safeties. Worst case, 10 schools: 4 reaches, 3 matches, 3 safeties.

I have to admit, I feel guilty about applying to so many, seeing as my family's financial status is allowing me to hedge my admissions bets. I might cut out one or two of the reach schools that I not terribly interested in (Cornell is too large and Williams... too northeastern and prone to enrolling disappointed Ivy hopefuls for my personal taste) if I don't get into my ED choice (Carleton). But time will tell.

Probably like 10-15....although most will be on the common application. Kinda strange though that I'm from California but I'm not doing UC's. Oh well I'm not writing 3 essays for them anyway.

Nine at most, probably eight, perhaps seven. That is, unless I get any fee waivers I can't refuse.

10, of which 4 fall under the UC application.

Im only a junior
I started my reseach with around 20... and now Im down to 4... lolz... not good... i need more safeties and such

meh, 5-6 at most, if I don't get in to my ED school. I live in VA, so we have great state schools that I'd love if I got in nowhere else, and frankly, if I like my safety more than some of the other schools I considered applying to, then why waste the admissions fee on the ones I don't like as much. Less work for me. :-)

I already finished applying to 9. Feels good to have everything done! I will apply to a couple more depending on the results which should trickle in by Dec 15th.

the majority is not at 10+ schools. the most popular is 10+ but the majority is applying to less than 10

Maybe only 1 if I get accepted by my top choice which has rolling admission

Currently, I'm thinking about applying to at least 12 colleges, because I need a lot of aids and would like to have choices to compare financial aid packages. If I get into my ED, the number will drop down to 6 (4 safeties + 1 match + 1 ED), all under Rolling or EA (not single-choice)/ED.

I hate people who apply ED and cant afford it...

elaborate please (haha i'm not doing it just curious)

Six.

One safety, one match, and four out-there reaches.

But when UMich is an in-state match, you really don't need more. :x

Just 181 x 10 schools = 1810 applications

Among the 456 people who voted, there are 3,583 applications (and that is asuming everyone who marked 10+ is applying to 10!). No wonder college admissions is messed up.

Anyone who chose 10 or more colleges is ridiculous. It's a total waste of money and just plain dumb.

I beg to differ. It's actually quite reasonable if:
a. You're applying to a lot of reaches. And schools like UCLA and Cal are slight reaches even for in-state residents with great stats.
b. You can apply to multiple schools on a single app.
c. You're not really sure what kind of school you'd like to go to and/or haven't been able to visit many of them but want to keep your options open.
d. You plan on using financial aid offers from other more generous schools to bargain with the college you want to go to.

a. You shouldn't be applying to a lot of reaches, it is a waste of money and makes it harder for everyone else to get in.
b. Sometimes
c. So why are you applying to so many reaches?
d. "if you don't give me more Yale ... I swear i'll goto Omaha State" is not going to get you anywhere.

I don't have as many reaches (or colleges) on my list as a lot of other people I know/people here, so please don't attack me personally.

a. If someone wants to spend his money applying to like 15 colleges, not that I think anybody should, that's his (/his parents') problem for wasting money, not yours.
Also, if I apply to a reach school, I consider it a reach because I would love to go there but think I probably won't get in anyway. But in the off-chance I do, it's worth a shot. So it's not significantly harder for anyone else to get in. Unless you're one of those people who is basically a shoo-in everywhere; then you're just taking spots from other people.

c. I didn't understand your comment. But out of my reach colleges, each obviously has differences in the way its program is structured and thus its pros and cons. Ultimately it will come down to which colleges (if any) will accept me, and then which program I decide is better for me. I like all of them, but for different reasons.

d. Obviously not. But some privates are more likely to give aid than others. Not all schools will be willing to negotiate based on how much others are offering, but some do and might give you more money depending on how much they want you.

My "you" was an all-enclosing you ... not attacking you specifically, csquare. I apologize if it came off that way.

When colleges get 30,000 apps a peice - it does make it harder cause there is more competition.

You ignored my sometimes comment for B ... I'm assuming because I'm correct.

C I am choosing to ignore as my eyelids are dragging.

D. Is not a good enough reason - not firm enough.

Anyways my thoughts on this issue. Good nite.
