POLL: How many schools do you plan to apply to?

10-13 for me.

Probably around 10 or so. I don’t want to apply to so many schools that I don’t really know them, but I also want to keep my options open (financially and also just in terms of what I’m interested in).

Hmm… I think 8 or 9.

3 Reaches [1 is free application]
5 Matches [2 are free applications]
1 Safety

So, I’m only really paying for 6!

Wow… I didn’t know people actually planned on applying to so many schools. Seniors from last year all told me that they all wanted to apply to 10+ schools, but most of them got lazy and worn-out during the application process so they only ended up applying to 4-6 schools max.

I don’t even know how many I’m going to apply to right now. I have a large list on my computer of schools that I’m interested in, but there’s no way I’m applying to all of them. Right now looks like at least 8-10 schools, but who knows? Maybe I’ll become lazy, as well.

Probably 7-9.

About 10-15. How do you determine whether a school is match or reach? By SAT scores?

xrCalico23: By comparing your SAT scores and GPA to their average/middle 50%, keeping in mind selectivity (i.e. having scores that compare well to top schools does not mean that you’ll necessary get into all of them since they’re so selective). You can also use Naviance, if your school offers it, or ask your guidance counselor what the track record is for your high school for the colleges you’re looking at.

^Thanks!

Very rarely do kids from my high school get into top colleges, so it’s been hard for me to decide which schools are match/reach based on school’s record. I’m trying to make it up by applying to a wide range of schools.

I applied to 10 schools when I went through the process though I had more like 15 on the slate. I’ve read what a lot of you have said about the types of schools you will apply to (reach, match, safety) and I learned this in my process (may be intuitive for some but for those who it is not so obvious): Apply early action to as many of your schools as possible, especially matches. The reason I did not apply to all 15 was that I applied three places early action and got into 2, deferred at the third to RD. Based on that, I knew there were certain schools I wouldn’t go to even if I got in based on my acceptances. That not only cut down on my school apply list and app fees (big issue for some), but also allowed me to replace most of my schools with reaches and high matches. I see a lot of people say they will only be going for 1-2 reaches but I think when it comes to the college app process, sometimes it pays off to be a little more aggressive. If the top colleges are such a crapshoot as everyone says they are, if you think you have a chance, go for it and don’t limit yourself. Yeah this might make the process longer and more grueling than it already is, but it’s your future and it’s worth it (plus you get to come back here and do these kinds of posts to tell other people and try to help them!).

Those interesting in Engineering, note that these schools focus on formal or informal early application schedules. Aim for October submissions with December 1 being the deadline.

Given the repetitiveness of the essays, once you get in the rythum of writing them, they flow all the better. Be sure to let the essay sit for a month, mellowing, edit, and then have someone else edit.

DD’s prep school is encouraging people to not apply to more then 10 schools—which means that everyone is applying to way more then 10 schools. Most are applying to 15+.

I’m probably going to apply to only 4-6 schools. I’m insane, right?

1…

…someone had to say it

Haha, really? Is it ED?

1 Safety
1 Low-match
4 Matches (according to College *******, anyways, which isn’t really the best source…)
3 High-matches
2 Reaches

7 to 9
Here is Florida the college situation is turning brutal. Very good students will be turned down from what they though was a safety due to “No Room In The Inn”.

2safeties

12 Colleges.
5 Match
3 Reach
