...But I just want to compare two schools that are sometimes mixed up. And I don't really get whether these are under/overrated in terms of competition to get in or quality or what. But there you have it--my meaningless contribution.

Overrated: The entire Ivy League -- why do people just blindly worship these schools...? Going there doesn't make you any better than anyone else. Even the mere structure of the board promotes it; why aren't all schools divided into their respective athletic leagues? Why is the Ivy League even outside the realm of "Top Universities"??

Underrated: Many LACs, WUStl (my god you guys beat on poor WUStl.)

uhh the ivies aren't overrated. sure in terms of the educational experience, there are other schools that deserve the same amount of recognition as the ivies. However, the fact of the matter is when you apply to grad school/apply for a job... people get very excited when they see "Harvard Graduate." There is an allure that an ivy league education carries that most schools cannot replicate (aside from the other obvious top schools such as Stanford, Duke, MIT, etc.)

so maybe going to an ivy league doesnt necessarily make you smarter than someone who goes to X university... but in most cases, with all other things being equal, it does make you better off in terms of graduate placement/employment.

Overrated: Stanford (for undergrad, GREAT grad school); Pomona (their motto is so arrogant, "Our tribute to Christian Civilization"); Middlebury

Underrated: UC San Diego; Claremont McKenna

underrated: Washington College...one of the top LAC according to USNEWS

Overrated: MIT...FYI highest suicide rate amoung undergrads...would make me think twice before wanting a dorm room on the top floor of the building

Underrated: Nearly every top school in the West (with the possible exception of Stanford -- which at least some Easterners will admit they have heard of)
