yeah, honestly, I'm not that excited about UVA... I can deal with a big public uni, but the atmosphere is askgdhs and Charlottesville is in the middle of NOWHERE! but I'm not gonna get into anything better and my parents won't pay for out of state if it's not like Ivy League :(

Overrated: Cornell (though i still want to go there...)

Underrated- U of R

since everyone is bashing the ivies i'll just consider them in my response

Overrated: Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth

Middle: Princeton, UPenn

Underrated: Brown, Columbia, Cornell

Overrated: Most LACs. You pay private university fees for marginal prestige (despite what some advocates will tell you, LACs are not really "well-regarded" by academia; if you want prestige and the best students, either go to a top three LAC or a top ten national university).

Overrated: Wake Forest (what the crap? no one in California knows this place exists)

Underrated: CalTech for sure.

Suicide more recently has been a bit of a problem at MIT from what I have read (I am a psychology major who studies suicide and hopes to study college suicide in graduate school). http://www.afsp.org/education/recommendations/3/3.html They have made some steps to fight it, however, including how they grade freshman. I think it isn't fair to cite numbers from the 90's and say there is no problem there because there are more recent articles out there saying that it may be a problem (as seen above). However, while it is a difficult school, what I think you should take from this is that the school is working on making it be less suicide prone. It is a very good school, however, and this isn't something that would keep me from going there.

If you ever have serious suicidal thoughts be sure to immediately tell someone you trust and get the help you need. There are a lot of treatments out there and there is always more hope out there than it seems. Good luck and stay safe!

Under: Dartmouth, Brown, Reed

I would tend to disagree that suicide has been a recent problem at MIT -- the rash of suicides was really in the mid-90s.

Did you even read the article you cite (or, more relevantly, the critique next to it)?

The Boston Globe story on suicides at MIT is misleading and runs the danger of contributing to the problem it attempts to address.

Based on 10 undergraduate suicides over 11 years, the article concludes that suicide is a greater danger at MIT than elsewhere. When one factors in that science and business students have considerably higher suicide rates than liberal arts students, and that male college students kill themselves five times more often than female college students, the figures quoted prove nothing. MIT is cited as currently being composed of 59 percent male students; that fact alone would make the suicide rate differences with most other colleges understandable; but in the early 1990s an even higher percentage of the students at MIT were male.
Statistically speaking, in the mid-90s MIT did not have a "suicide problem" -- it had a "too many male students" and "too many engineering students" problem.

Since some people in CA don't know about a school, that automatically means it provides an inferior education? Most people in NC would say the same thing about Rice. Or Pomona. Or Brown. Or Swarthmore. Or many other of the schools CC'ers work so hard to get into. Wake is at least on par with many other top schools- on the undergraduate level.

Warblers: well, of course. I was being sarcastic. :P
