Poll: What math sequence were you in for school?

<p>In chronological order:</p>

<p>1st Algebra I
2nd Algebra II
8th Algebra I
8th Geometry
6th Some formal logic class
6th Elementary school math
7th Algebra I
8th Algebra II/Geometry
9th Precalculus (Calc I over summer)
10th Calculus II/III + AP Stats
11th DiffEq/Linear Algebra/Discrete Math/Graph Theory/Abstract Algebra</p>

<p>...Yeah, let's just say my educational progress has been...nonlinear.</p>

<p>***? you took algebra in first grade? okay that's literally impossible, unless you were a genius</p>

<p>My sequence (no AP or honors until Calc):</p>

<p>7th grade: Pre-algebra
8th grade: Algebra I
9th: Geometry
10th: Alg. II/trig
11th: Precalc
12th: Calc AB then BC (on quarter system)</p>

<p>Independent study with EPGY. My parents pushed me quite a lot.
But there's no need to be surprised, given these were the same parents who used to prep me in advance for IQ tests. And who believed books were an acceptable substitute for friends :-/</p>

<p>DS1 -- currently a junior
5th - pre-Alg, matrix math, Z-tables
6th - Alg I
7th - Geometry
8th - one sem Alg II
9th - Functions (intense pre-calc/trig)
10th - Analysis I (BC Calc 1st semester, more calc 2nd)
summer - summer math program with many cool topics
11th - multivariable, DiffEq, AP Stat (one semester class), Discrete Math, working with mentor on CS-related math
12th - LinAlg, Complex Analysis, more working with mentor, plus possibly a CS-related math and a somewhat proof-based class, depending on scheduling conflicts</p>

<p>DS2 -- currently a freshman
7th - Alg I
8th - Geometry
9th - Alg II w/Analysis
10th - Pre-Calc w/Analysis
11th - Calc AB (for IB Math SL exam)
12th - AP Stat (full year)</p>

<p>That's such a lie, EPGY wasn't even created back then. You're a bad liar and you'd have to be pretty uninteligent to take 8 years to go to precalculus from algebra 1. :)</p>

<p>This is to Fizix.</p>

<p>Masterus,</p>

<p>Before you start slandering people on this list, might I direct you to the following link, which I found within 30 seconds via Google:</p>

<p><a href="http://epgy.stanford.edu/overview/faq.html#history%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://epgy.stanford.edu/overview/faq.html#history&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p>

<p>haha Masterus got owned :D</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>This is rather sad...I suppose we're all considered pretty smart here at CollegeConfidential.</p>

<p>But yeah, I think I've gotten more uninteligent over the years. Kinda like how my AIME score just decreased by 5 points this year :D</p>

<p>6th grade: regular math (no placements)
7th grade: accelerated pre-algebra
8th grade: accelerated algebra 1
for 9th grade: honors algebra 2 and geometry
for 10th grade: more honors algebra 2 and geometry, trigonometry
for 11th grade: more trigonometry, precalculus and differential calculus
for senior year: ap calculus bc</p>

<p>Also, only 10% of HS students take a calculus course.

<p>It's not due to intelligence per se, but more likely because the students who go to the "better" high schools are more likely to have Internet access and to have knowledge about the college applications process (A sociology prof told my class that students in the urban districts of one city didn't even know how to apply to college). On the other hand, since intelligence is correlated with socioeconomic status, the more intelligent students are still more likely go to the better schools.</p>

<p>I suppose that's one reason why Caltech doesn't officially have Calculus as one of its pre-requisites (Harvey Mudd does though). For the occasional math genius who may not be going to a good school. I know someone who would definitely be able to tackle Math 1a straight off the bat without any prior exposure to calculus (very few would be able to do this, but it's still possible).</p>

<p>But yeah, I definitely made a similar observation at the other Internet community I go to. Three selection processes. (a) those with access to the Internet, (b) those who are thoughtful enough to go on forums, which expect the user to be more thoughtful/intelligent than an online chatroom, (c) you get people with such criteria from potentially the whole world. Also, there is more motivation to post on online forums when one isn't socialized fully with his peers. I'm not quite sure what that means, since I have close to 0 real life friends, but people I meet online still tell me that they don't get too involved with high school social dynamics.</p>

<p>Well, Ben Golub took Calc BC in either 10th or 11th grade according to his CV (definitely one of those years). But then he went insane with teh maths his 12th grade year.</p>

<p>7th: Pre-Algebra
8th: Algebra (1)
9th: Geometry
10th: Algebra 2
11th: Pre-Calc
12th: Calc (AB or BC, not sure) and Stats</p>

<p>7th: Math 7 (pre-pre algebra)
8th: Algebra (skipped pre-alg)
9th: Geometry honors
10th: Algebra II honors
11th: Calculus AB (skipped pre-calc)
12th: Calculus BC (online, school didn't offer it)</p>

<p>college...HMC
1st year: Lin Al I, Dif Eq I, MultiV I
2nd year: MultiV II, ProbStat, Lin Al II (dropped), Diff Eq II</p>

<p>6th: Math 6 (normal lol)
7th: Pre-alg/ intro to alg I
8th: Alg I/II (accelerated class) (switched schools after this)
9th: Geometry/ Trig Honors
10th: Algebra II Honors
11th: Precalc Honors
12th: AP Calc BC (unless I suddenly fail 4th quarter)</p>

<p>[rant] So yeah...if I hadn't switched schools (both private) after 8th, I would have taken calc in 10th (not that impressive I know) but they made me take alg II overagain and wouldnt let me test out of precalc...so I've done nothing in math for to years...fun lol [/rant]</p>

<p>7th: algebra
8th: geometry
9th: functions (algebra II + precalculus)
10th: calculus I, calculus II
11th: statistics, calculus III, differential equations
12th: linear algebra, advanced geometry, complex analysis</p>

<p>haha fizix...</p>

<p>parenthesis are out of school
1st- (pre-al)
4th- (alg 1)
5th- (geometry, alg 2, logic, graph theory)
6th- alg 1
7th- geometry
8th- alg 2, (pre-calculus)
9th- math analysis
10th- ap calculus bc, ap stats, discrete math
11th- (EPGY-mvc, la)

7th-Alg
8th-Geometry
9th-Algebra II
10th-Pre-Cal/Trig
11th-Calc AB/BC
12th-Calc II</p>

<p>Nothing special but no one at my school has reached Calc II. Looking back on it, I wished I would have taken summer classes.</p>

<p>for the rest of us mere mortals out there</p>

<p>7th: pre algebra
8th: alg 1 honors
9th: geometry honors
10th: algebra 2 honors

11th- calc ab
12th(next year): calc c/d</p>

<p>8th: Algebra 1
9th: Geometry
10th: Algebra 2
11th: Precal
12th: AP Calc BC (real men take BC!)
Diff EQ</p>

<p>7th: Prealgebra
8th: Math 8 (whatever that may be)
9th: Algebra/geometry honors
10th: Geometry/Algebra2 honors
11th: Precalc honors-->dropped to precal
