Polly Want A Cracker?

Triscuits remind me of what salted shredded wheat would taste like. Love 'em!

And I know why: When I was 12, I was hospitalized for a no-fun procedure. I wasn’t allowed to eat for some period of time beforehand, and after the procedure was over I was ravenous. My father got me a box of Triscuits from the gift shop and I thought they were the most delicious things I had ever eaten.

My DH recently had COVID and he craved these so much DD found them and dropped some off. To me they sound like a salt delivery vehicle.

I am not a big cracker fan, but I would choose Wheat Thins

I don’t understand crushing up crackers to put in soup. If it was supposed to be in there, it would be in the recipe!

Ideally for me it’s for texture so you put some cracker pieces (I don’t crush them all the way to dust) and have a spoonful of soup while the cracker still has some crunch. You add crackers as you go along with eating the soup.

Growing up we’d have saltines w/ PBJ on them alongside a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Yum. I prefer wheat thins, triscuits and ritz although I don’t t eat them often. If I kept goldfish in the house they’d be gone quickly- definitely can’t eat just a few.
I think Carr’s water crackers are meant for a spread or dip or even some cerviche since the cracker itself has very little taste, imo.

My ex secretary would crush them all up and put them in the soup before eating any. It was definitely a process and it would be very thick by the time she was ready to insert her spoon. It was fascinating.

My dad (he died at 99 years old) loved Ritz crackers. He always talked about how when they started they’d go up and down his street giving out free samples to get people to try them.

Ritz is probably my favorite overall cracker, but I also really like Wheat Thins (which I ate a lot when I was young) and Breton crackers (which I only discovered as an adult). Favorite nostalgic crackers are the original Goldfish, which I haven’t eaten since my kids were young.

Triscuits and Ritz are both popular at our house.

My dad (died at 92) was a huge Ritz fan too! He drove a newspaper delivery truck and worked overnight. Every morning when I got up for school, he was at the head of the kitchen table eating Ritz and Skippy peanut butter and reading the paper.

I’ve never met a cracker I didn’t like and that includes graham and animal crackers. We always have several types of crackers in the house. The cracker section of the store is one of my favorite places to browse

This is a satanic nut cracker… I don’t like this cracker!

This inspired a reflection on a life in crackers.

Ritz or Waverly wafers were childhood favorites when a fancier restaurant would bring a basket of wrapped crackers with the soup or salad.

Ak Mak as a young backpacker with honey and peanut butter or avocado

Jacobs cream crackers, so rich when I discovered them, as well as McVitties wholemeal biscuits in Britain.

The packaged peanut butter crackers that tasted of heaven working hospital shifts with no meal break possible.

Wheat Thins and Triscuits, family standards when my kids were young. Both addictive in different ways.

White Cheddar Cheese Its, the best indulgence.

Now, gluten avoidant, I buy a rare bag of Pecan Thins as well as those tiny little Trader Joe’s rice crackers which are good for scooping hummus.

I thought we were going to dissect Nirvana’s Polly song. But no; we actually went with actual crackers.

Imagine my disappointment.

I love crackers, but we have had to go gluten free. Nut thins work, but Lance just popped up with a GF box of crackers that gives me hope for little GF snack packs with peanut butter or cheese on them.

I saw them in a supermarket yesterday and thought of this thread!

I haven’t had a Ritz since my kids were young. They liked the Ritz bits with peanut butter but not the cheese. My husband likes triscuits and wheat thins but I only buy them when we are camping. His everyday cracker is rice crackers. He likes both the rounds and the bite sized from Trader Joe’s. We all enjoy Goldfish crackers but again that’s not an everyday purchase. I love the small crackers that have nuts and dried fruits. I also enjoy the wavy edged water cracker that is sold in a lot of cheese shops.

I like lots of cracker brands/types, but probably my favorite is Town House.

If there is a plate or platter of good aged cheddar and really any kind of flat cracker, I’ll put a large dent in the supply.

We will buy fancy artisanal crackers for cheese platters and hors d’oeuvres but rarely a box for general consumption. I do like Cheez-Its, Nut Thins, and flavored Triscuits, though, when someone else serves them.
