Pomona and Med School

How good is Pomona at getting people into Med School, and more importantly, MD/PHD programs?

I don’t have the exact numbers, but the med school acceptance rate is around the highest in the country (about 90%). Not something to worry about if you’re considering Pomona.

@Santeria: Where can I find more detail about the med school acceptance data? My S is trying to decide between Pomona/Stanford/WUSTL pre-med program… He also hope to keep his piano and/or composition if possible. Any extra info to help him decide?

You can browse through this site for the basic Pomona pre-med info.

This is where Pomona grads immediately went last year. You can look through and see if the acceptance rate is there.

I’m not pre-med, but it’s pretty popular at Pomona. I think the biggest difference for those choices would be class sizes in the pre-med req classes. I’m sure they can get pretty big at Stan/WashU, while at Pomona they stay relatively small. There also won’t be TA’s, as there are no grad students. Typically, intro classes at the larger schools end up dividing into smaller groups run by TA’s, so you don’t get much interaction with the actual professor. I’d also assume that translates into advising, just because there are less pre-meds to advise and therefore more individual attention.

Beyond that, med schools won’t really differentiate between an applicant from any of those three schools. Your son should go wherever he’ll be happiest.

I can’t really help you with the music part. Try calling someone in the music department, and I’m sure they would answer any questions you have.

Our daughter is currently a freshman at Pomona. Although shy by nature, she is having the time of her life; challenged academically, making more good friends than she has ever had, and growing in every aspect of her being.

Part of that process involves higher level piano lessons with Genevieve Lee in the Pomona Music department. She is enjoying every minute, and Prof. Lee is stretching and maximizing our daughter’s talent in ways we never could have imagined. Check out Prof. Lee’s qualifications and you will see that she is a world-class artist in her own right.

As a family that chose Pomona over Stanford, I am happy to report to you that you simply can’t go wrong with Pomona. It’s everything we hoped for and more.

Can anyone shed some light on EC opportunities for premed students, like physician shadowing, volunteering in a clinic, etc. in the Claremont area. Thanks!

seems like a pretty old thread… but

CAN anyone give some thoughts on EC opportunities for pre med students!!!???

it seems like the location of the college is “secluded” and far away from the city, where health-related internships/volunteering abound.
so are pre med students “trapped” in pomona?

do they still get to get to choose from a variety of volunteer opps?

and how diverse are the communities around pomona? (race-wise cuz where I live now it’s pretty undiverse)

and where do people get the 85-90% stats? I’m interested to know where you guys got that. Send me a link to the stats. cuz from what I saw on their official health page, the rate is about 75% average throughout the years (not that the stats really matter, just wondering how you guys keep saying its 90%)

thanks

Those look like national statistics.

^^yeah, does anyone know if those are national, or just Pomona?
