I'm writing a comparitave college essay and I was wondering which of the following colleges would be best to compare/contrast against pomona & cmc.

Choices:
- Duke Univ.
- Amherst College
- University of Chicago
- Dartmouth College
- Columbia Univ.
- Whitman
- Stanford

The only issue about stanford (and columbia i suppose.. but not if i do ED.. not that i will because i love pomona so much more than that Sagehens PWN lions.. anyways) the issue about Stanford and Columbia is that it's near immpossible to get in. Therefore these aren't my favorites, but what is one good college to compare against Pomona? Any fresh ideas?

I don't know enough about the schools on your list or this essay to be too helpful, but here's a sad attempt, nonetheless.

There have been a few very relevant posts on CC...do some back-research. There was a lengthy one on Pomona v. Bowdoin and there have been LOTS on "Pomona is like which eastcoast LAC?" Also lots of "Which schools fit these criteria" posts that include Pomona/CMC and schools on your list.

Somebody-or-other puts out a college book that includes short lists of "Students also look at and often/sometimes/rarely prefer..." schools. I THINK this is a Princeton Review book, but I might be wrong. These lists might be helpful in giving you an idea.

What's this essay for? Is it an application essay? Your own prompt or a given one? I just don't remember ever running into a comparative application essay, so I have trouble imagining that's it (seems like a no-win situation), but I don't know what else it would be...

It's for IB English...

Ah, okay...makes much more sense. That's basically the most horrible application prompt I could imagine...talk about treading a thin line :-P

On your list, I believe Amherst is the closest to comparing against Pomona (don't know about CMC). IMHO, another East Coast LAC that would be comparable to Pomona is Swarthmore.
