I have been lurking on this thread for a while now and finally made an account upon reading what @PomonaRunner32 said.
While your information on athletic recruitment is very useful and highly appreciated, can you clarify what you meant by saying: “with a bonus of knowing about a month and a half before those ugly, non-student athletes.”?
While it seems like you are well-qualified and very confident about your admission, if you truly meant the quite derogatory words you have declared, I sincerely hope Pomona, a school that very much values a collaborative environment with decent, kind students, will be able to detect your clear sense of superiority and reject you.
It’s a mean joke, @123Arda , as BusinessDad pointed out. What someone thinks of as funny reveals character. If you think it’s funny to call anyone who isn’t an athlete ‘ugly’, you’re validating a bully viewpoint that doesn’t fit the Pomona mindset.
Now, if the person had been self-deprecating talking about dumb jocks, that would not have been punching down. But speaking from a privileged position and saying mean things about people who do not have that privilege is rarely funny to anyone who isn’t in the same class and power level as the writer.
One of the big rules about writing a college entrance essay is that you shouldn’t try to be funny unless you really are funny. This is one of the pitfalls of humor - you liked it, you showed it to your friends who think just like you and they liked it. But unless you get an admissions officer who is just like you and your friends, they probably won’t think it’s funny.
@ninakatarina Just a side note, as an actual Pomona student, bullies DO still exist at these schools, lol. Even people at institutions such as Pomona can be sh***y people.
Yes, but if you have something in your application that hints at the bully mindset you can bet you’d better have cured cancer and won Olympic medals if you want to be admitted.
@BusinessDad@ninakatarina While it’s true of most LACs, one of the few drawbacks I found with Pomona was the relative abundance of far left-leaning people who lack a sense of humor and think everything is a personal attack/attempt to ‘marginalize’ them. People like this give a bad name to liberals and left-leaning moderates, and we as a whole get generalized as sensitive snowflakes/SJWs with paper-thin skin to right-leaning folks. I guess I was wrong when I thought people who apply to Pomona would be smart enough to recognize obvious sarcasm. I’m well aware that tone and inflection can’t be interpreted in an online context, but seriously people, it’s pretty damn obvious I was joking.
With specific regard to @BusinessDad 's blatant ad hominem: You and people like you are the problem with modern society. The fact that one misinterpreted joke motivated you to finally make an account to call me out on the ‘derogatory words I have declared’ speaks volumes about your character. Not to mention your attempt to sound authoritative with that aforementioned phrase, whereas I had made my post with the intent of helping people through a confusing process, then included a small bit of self-deprecating humor, YOU posted with the sole intent of disparaging me for a perceived slight against you. You ask me to clarify my meaning then viciously attack my character a sentence later. Rather than engage in sensible discourse, maybe along the lines of ‘I’m not sure if you’re joking or not with the word ugly, please clarify?’ you viciously attack me over a single word. You have never met me, you don’t know what kind of person I am, you are in no position to say " I sincerely hope Pomona, a school that very much values a collaborative environment with decent, kind students, will be able to detect your clear sense of superiority and reject you." By saying this, you are labeling me as an indecent, unkind, egotistical jerk. And you are basing this complete defamation of my character based off of a SINGLE WORD! Even then, are we seriously this upset over the word ‘ugly’? I’d expect a response of this magnitude had I said something ridiculous like the Earth is flat or the Holocaust was made up. I hope that your son or daughter who I’ll assume is looking at Pomona has grown up seeing this as an example of how not to act, online or in person.
I am sorry that people seem to have misinterpreted my attempt at humor, I’ll avoid making jokes, and I sincerely hope @BusinessDad realizes how unjustified his personal attack of me was. If you have a minuscule amount of decency, you’ll recognize the derogatory nature of your comment.
Thanks to @123Arda for having the brains to recognize a joke when you see one.
“At most D3 schools, PAR equivalents are offered to borderline student athlete applicants (50/50 shot of getting in). Better qualified applicants usually don’t need that extra help from coaches in the form of a PAR or equivalent, they can get in solely off academic merit.”
I have been through the D3 recruiting process twice. The coaches that we spoke with in the NESCAC definitely offer PAR equivalents to the highly qualified academic students, not just the “borderline” applicants.
For those of you with athletes that were deferred, I would ask for advice on the Athletic Recruit sub-forum. Good luck.
I applied for Pomona ED II through the Questbridge application. Is the acceptance rate for Questbridge students and just regular decisions students different?
14-day countdown to ED II result (hopefully they’ll release earlier cuz waiting is exhausting lol
I’m a Chinese Theatre major ED II applicant and Feb 16(well by the time the result is out its the 16th here) is the first day of Chinese New Year and probably the last Chinese New Year I can spend in China with my family in at least 4 yrs so Pomona please don’t let me down cuz that means you are also letting my entire family with over 2 dozen people down X_X
I’m curious as well. ED1 decisions came out Friday December 8th at 5 pm. (Which was the Friday before the advertised release date of December 15th). Hopefully they come out soon.
