[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Oregon State University accepted, Beloit College accepted, still waiting on more.
**General Comments: ** Time to suffer in the RD Pool! Congrats to everyone who got in ED! I hope I can join you guys! And remember, if anyone rejects you, they donât reject you, they reject a paper version of you, a number version of you.
@thasbutCh do you mind sharing your stats?
@abracadabra85 do you mind sharing your daughterâs stat ? I am just curious about the profiles of the accepted. My child is regarded as with great chance by GC/peers/teachers, and is discouraged by the result, and tried to figure out what is the major factor for the rejection.
Anyone here know how many ED applicants they have this year? How many they accept? In particular, how many CA applicants they accept? Thanks!
Accepted:)

Objective:
- [] SAT I (breakdown): Highest superscore is 1480. 780 English and 700 Math. 7-5-7 Essay portion.
[] ACT (breakdown): n/a
[] SAT II: n/a
[] Unweighted GPA: 3.99
[] Weighted GPA: 4.89
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 26/330
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APHG(4), APWH(5), APMusTheory(5), APPsych(5), APLang(3), APUSH(4), APBio(4), APSpanish(5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: APCompSci, APCalcAB, APMacro, APUSGov, APES, APLit, MusEnsembleIV, PianoStudiesIV
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): not sure what these are, but I havenât receiced any major recognition for my academics, nothing national or anything.
Subjective:
- [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I have piano lessons per week and kickboxing 3 times a week.
[] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[] Volunteer/Community service: I have participated in music-related events like performing in nursery homes and teaching kids music theory. I have also done beach cleanup and volunteering for festivals, as well as animal shelter work (not as frequent)
[] Summer Activities: during the summer I travel a lot, mostly for ecotourism, but also for music activities. I participate in music camps/festivals, and have recently taken part in competitions from said camps. Iâve also done an environmental enrichment course last summer and travelled to Mass. for a medical congress (which was boof not gonna lie⊠donât go to those events they offer you through mail cus âyouâve been selected to represent your school in ___â)
[] Essays: my essays talked about my cultural background and lifestyle. I had a reviewer take a look at the finished versions and make suggestions about mostly word choice and sentence flow. I also had 2 former english teachers take a look at the finished-reviewed versions to check sentence flow as well, and they both said I should consider becoming a writer because of my writing style. I took that as a sign that my essays were good haha
[] Teacher Recommendation: I canât say much about this. I asked one of the previously mentioned english teacher for a recommendation, as well as my current calculus teacher. Although I do struggle greatly in her class and have (quite) mediocre grades in the subject, I do work really hard to get those Câs and hoped she would talk about that in her rec.
[] Counselor Rec: I scared my counselor because I asked her a little too close to the deadline, but she later came up to me and said that she forgave me because she enjoyed writing about me. We became close quick due to similar backgrounds, and, in her words, I grew lots throughout high school. So I think my counselor rec was strong.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: I was excited to have my first interview, and Iâm confident I made a good impression. The interviewer asked about all kinds of things, but mostly the questions that you would expect. Some questions were completely casual and not academically related, which threw me off initially. Overall I think the interview was beneficial to my application.
[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): I submitted 2 piano recording supplements as well as a resumĂ© of my past performances/competitions/recognitions. Iâve performed with national orchestras, participated in various international competitions, and took part in camps, etc.
Other
- [] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL

[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: 100k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first gen college, immigrant
Reflection
- [] Strengths: I think my strengths were my essays, my interview, and my supplements. In all three of these I was able to show the human side of me, and establish a personality behind my âstatsâ. I was able to talk about my chaotic childhood and how that shaped me etc etc, to give a background to the personality. Overall I think itâs really important to sound human in your application.
[] Weaknesses: my test scores were definitely not impressive compared to the perfect score reports I see on this thread. As you can tell, my math score is under the average for students applying to Pomona, and this very much terrified me when time came to submit my results to the Common App. My extracurriculars are lackluster, having only piano lessons and kickboxing (mostly personal and not group-based activities). I donât think recitals and performances count as extracurriculars either. I have no work experience and my volunteer events are mostly single time, 1 or 2 week-long committments (volunteering for festivals and music camps doesnât happen every Saturday haha) rather than consistent weekly events. Even my beach cleanup service (which is more consistent) is kind of on a biweekly/monthly basis. I have no academic recognition and no leadership positions in clubs at school.
[] Why you think you were accepted: I honestly think that it was because I expressed my personality, character, and values through many mediums to create a human image of myself. I acknowledged my shortcomings but emphasized my strengths. Itâs important to be honest, because nobody is going to have the picture perfect application detailing the picture perfect life.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Since I applied to ED1 for Pomona, I did not get any results for other colleges because I havenât applied.
**General Comments: ** Iâm really excited to meet my future classmates and Iâm wishing you all success and good luck on your applications! If you are applying RD to Pomona, keep in mind that, at least in my situation, YOU matter more than your stats! Make it clear who you are, donât be afraid to show your shortcomings under full light. Apply for interviews if still possible, since they do in fact weight those. And rock that interview! Again, the best of luck to everyone <3
surprisingly accepted!
@MyGreatKids I donât believe Pomona even released last yearâs numbers until about a month ago. They showed about a 20% jump in combined ED1 & 2 applications over the previous year to about 1,200. Of those, about 170 were admitted through the regular ED process (thatâs not counting Questbridge match and Posse admits). Over the past few years, about 25% of all admitted students have been from California.
Here you go briefly.

Hi Does any know if Pomona gives merit scholarships ?
Not really. Pomona says doesnât need to offer merit to draw high achievers, so it can instead focus on meeting need. However, per the website: âPomona awards scholarships to a limited number of enrolling National Merit FinalistsâŠwhich range from $1,000 to $2,000.â And, Pomona also offers some academic âawards and prizesâ (https://www.pomona.edu/students/academic-awards-and-distinctions) to continuing students, which range from about $100 to $12,000 (but thereâs only one of those!).
Thank you @otisp .
Any other EDII applicants here? Super nervous for Friday!
