How long are you making your supplement essay? They don't include a word count so ... yeah.

Mine was 550-ish. I figured about the same as the main essay would be good.

Mine was 250ish

Just counted 616 words.
Turned out a bit longer than my common app essay.

I think any length is fine just as long as it's not some 5 or 10 page monster. That's what I like about these open-ended essays - you can use just as many words as you need.

As long as it needs to be, they would say. Around 500 words should do it.

I didn't write a supplemental essay. And I got in. So I don't think it's something to stress about.

Yeah well you're probably a genius or managed to find the cure for cancer.

how selective IS pomona? i don't know anyone who went there other than my 50 year old history teacher

jackie:

Take a look at the thread from SarahsDad entitled, "Pomona Releases 2007-2008 Common Data Set". It's just a few down from this one.

ummmm...my essay is 1000 words at the moment. I've read it over a few times and it's not repetitive, but do you think it would be a good idea to shorten it?

pleeeaase give me your opinion because i'm really agonizing over it. I've already pared down my essay quite a bit from what it was before, but i'm wondering if i should pare it down more.

I would absolutely shorten it. If it's not a required essay, the admissions office is NOT going to want to read something 2x the length of the CoA essay.

I submitted an additional essay with my common application in the Additional Information Section. Should I still write one of Pomona's supplemental essays?

The additional information is not for the essay, what subject did you write about? Yes you still need to answer the Pomona question.

What's wrong with including an additional essay for the common app? And I was asking because on Pomona's supplement it says, in bold letters mind you, "If you only submitted one sample, you are strongly encouraged to respond to one of the following prompts." And I submitted 2, so it would seem like they don't want any more from me. But I guess I should still do one of their supplemental essays?

Wow, my common app essay was 1400 words easily. You all encourage fewer?

I honestly think adcomms (particularly thoughtful ones like Bruce Poch and his cohorts) would prefer you use the words necessary to say what you want to say...not shorten needlessly.

That said, I'm in Jack Bern's position too--I had to explain an unfortunate discipline circumstance and used the opportunity to wedge a secondary essay in there. Should I submit an additional Pomona essay? That would mean I had four...

well treesnogger,
you're situation is quite different from JackBurn's. What he did was stick an extra essay in the additional comments section. What you did was explain an outside circumstance, which is essentially additional information appropriate for an additional comments section (however, i do believe the common ap has a specific section where you can upload an essay to explain a disciplinary circumstance. You may not have used this either because the disciplinary options provided did not apply to your case, or because you didn't notice the section).

Back to my original point. The additional comments section is for additional comments. It's for things you would like to explain or things you would like to let the college know about that you weren't able to include anywhere else in your ap (i included my nomination for a semi-prestigious scholarship). Generally, colleges don't appreciate the squeezing in of an extra essay. I would advise against this for almost any college.

Pomona may be different though. the phrasing of the question did make it
seem as if it were possible to answer more than one common ap essay. My advice: talk to someone at Pomona, and please don't send out any more essay in the additional comments section! =)

Oh, no, I meant that my essay WAS in the discipline section. Sorry if that was unclear.

It states respond to one of the following prompts for the second writing sample. So if you did not write one answering the prompt than that is not good.

Jack, I would not submit three essays. I do not think you have to submit an additional essay if you are already submitting two. The essay is, after all, optional. I also do not think that admissions wants to read three essays from one applicant.
