Pomona or Bust!

By the way, while there we cleverly tried to reserve a place at the Claremont Doubletree, where we have stayed on two previous occasions and really like, only to be told they are entirely sold out for Family Weekend.

We did a detailed search of the few alternatives in the area and decided to book the Sheraton Fairplex. We then took a trip over there to check it out…

Curiously, while it’s not far away in terms of absolute time and distance, being stuck in the middle of nowhere on the side of the barren fairgrounds, it somehow “feels” distant and removed from the Claremont area.

Perhaps we just like the fact that the Doubletree is so accessible to campus and the Village, and with its smaller scale is less of an impersonal “filing cabinet”-style hotel. Or maybe we’re just whiners, who knows?

At any rate, it seems to be the only game in town for those who find the Ontario area and its airport strip hotels to be on the chilly, downbeat side.

I really like Ontario airport. It’s fast, efficient, and very clean and nice inside (compared to Phoenix’s Skyharbor). It’s also very conveniently located…I made three trips in the past three days to pick people up, and never had any problems swiftly getting in and out.

Thanks, lolcats. As always, you are both helpful and kind.

Two final questions, if I may: Does the airport only run certain hours, and if you don’t have a pre-arranged pickup from a classmate is it easy to get a shuttle or cab to the campus?

BTW: How did your first year go? I have been following you from the time you were agonizing over your Columbia/Pomona decision and hope Pomona was all you had hoped for.

Best regards,

Glad you had such a good experience, enkephelon!

I’ve stayed at the Sheraton Fairplex a couple times, and really like it. Clean, spacious, well-appointed, and there’s a free shuttle to/fro Ontario airport. I think they’d even drive you to Pomona if you want.

Your D could book Super Shuttle in advance of her trip, to be assured of being met. The size of ONT is an asset, IMO. Very easy to get in and out of.

We had a very good experience at Doubletree in Ontario. It was about 12 minutes from the school and we paid $50/night on a priceline.com bid!!

When my D visited the school herself back in April she had a late night flight from Ontario. I booked the shuttle for her in advance and there was no trouble at all.

Is anyone pictured on the 2014 New Sagehen slideshow on the Pomona website? We are on the first page, picture #5 taken at the Recoop - I have now officially blown my CC cover!!

Although the Sheraton Fairplex may not be in the midst of it all, you’re probably going to be spending most of your time on campus! ;)

As for Ontario Airport, D never had any problems with Ontario all four years. On the other hand, H and I had a flight (after some R&R after a Pomona event) that connected to LAX and then non-stop home. ONT-LAX was cancelled; fortunately, we got to drop the rental car off at LAX and picked the flight up from there.

Most of D’s flights didn’t connect with LAX, so she never had any problems.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful advice, folks.

That makes me feel a whole lot better about both Family Weekend accommodation and Ontario airport.

NJ Mom of 2, you are the only CC person I recognize from the slide show (and you look mah-velous!!), but there is a slide of a woman and her son from our state (unusual at that). My husband knows her through business connections, and I met her at the admitted student day in April. She was really hoping her son would choose Pomona. He obviously did! :)

We have used the Ontario airport off and on for decades and love how easy it is to get in and out of. I can’t imagine that it would be difficult to get a cab from there, even late at night.

We also stayed at the Doubletree at Ontario Airport. It’s so easy to hop on the 10 and be on campus in about 10-15 minutes.

Thanks Bengalmom!! I don’t know how maahvelous I look but my D looks very happy!
