Pomona Social Scene

Hi guys, I have a question. A friend of mine was accepted to Pomona. The thing is that she's really straight-laced; she doesn't even drink. So having never been to Claremont, I was wondering if you can still have a social life without going to parties, bars, night clubs, etc.? How hard is this going to be on her? Thanks

Pomona has sub free floors on many dorms and they are always full. If you walk around campus on a weekend your impression would be that everyone drinks but there is a large sub free group and a substantial group from all 5 colleges that no longer drink. There are lots of activities, that do not involve partying. Many are scheduled when big parties are going on so there are alternatives. A few weeks back for example there was a huge moonlight frisbee game when a popular party was happening. My impression is that if you are partying heavily it appears that everyone else is and that if you are not you discover how many from the 5 colleges actually don't.

If your friend is interested in talking with some sub free folks e-mail me and I can pass on a student's e-mail who would be happy to answer any questions for your friend

It's okay! Pomona parties with alcohol are really terrible anyways, so your friend wouldn't be missing much. Also they card so a lot of times no one even has drinks except for the upperclassmen. And at Pomona your friend will be isolated from where all the crazy partying actually happens (Harvey Mudd).

I don't drink and I've been fine. It hasn't always been ideal...lots of movie nights...but that's also because I'm much more of a homebody than a partier. I have a number of non-drinking friends who still attend and enjoy parties. If you're willing to be proactive, or if you live on a subfree hall, you'll easily find ways to entertain yourself. Furthermore, I've never been or felt pressured to drink at all, nor has anyone I've talked to about it.

I would definitely recommend an overnight visit to your friend. Alcohol IS very present on the campuses, but it's easy and normal to have a life beyond/without it.

it's true that harvey mudd is the only 5C with a liquor license.
...it's been suggested that it's because they need it....

Drunk people make noise - thus are more noticeable than sober people. I have a lot of friends who don't even live in sub-free housing and still are completely sub-free. I drink now and then, but I often have sub-free fun - last weekend I didn't feel like drinking so me and some friends threw a midnight screening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - we got about thirty people to watch with us... it was awesome....

Thanks a lot for the input!
