Hey everyone,

Can't seem to find a thread for Pomona transfers, so if you're transferring post here! I'd love it if someone could chance me, I'm seriously not qualified by a long shot but hey, might as well try right?

anyone? i can’t be the only one!

Does Pomona College provide financial aid to Mexican Citizens?

I’ll be applying as a transfer!

I think their acceptance rate for transfers is around 6%, which is about the same as Harvard’s freshman acceptance rate. Pitzer is above 20%, though, and would make a good back up. Good luck to everyone applying.

In the college report Pomona asks the dean to answer several questions and add a longer recommendation if she/he has one. They also say at the top of the form that if your dean doesn’t know you well you can have another college official write you a recommendation. My dean doesn’t know me well, but I don’t really know any college officials. Should I have a third professor write a recommendation for me? What do you all think? What are you guys doing?

Do you have an advisor that could write the LOR in lieu of your Dean?

The form states:

This sounds like a prof would be OK, but you ought to give them a call to confirm.

Entomom, do you think it would be helpful if another professor wrote me a letter (in addition to the dean filling out the form and the already standard 2 professor recommendations)? Or would the additional recommendation be overkill?

I think 3 from profs is fine, particularly if they show different aspects of your academic or other interests.

Thanks for your help!

I’m finding first essay very interesting but also daunting in its scope. How are other people doing with it? What are others focusing on?

With the deadline approaching I just wanted to wish everyone good luck with Pomona! I know the numbers are a bit scary for transfers, but we can do it! :)

@succulent
The first essay prompt is still stumping me! How did you approach it?

This is interesting…I’m thinking of leaving Pomona. Where are you all coming from?

Purpleroses,

I think everyone is going to approach it differently and that that is part of the interesting thing about the question which makes it a bit more intimidating, but also freer–you can shape it basically however you want!

Good luck! You can do it!

CranberryOrange,

Why are you thinking about leaving Pomona?

There are a whole bunch of reasons–some me, some my situation, some the school.

I find that the social scene/party life is not so great. Because basically no one lives off campus and there are no frats, the party life is basically these school-sponsored dances, which I find kinda lame and difficult to meet people.

I also have found the sponsor program–which I thought would be great–to have put me in a weird situation. I love everyone in my sponsor group, but they’re not my best friends, and it can be hard to get outside of the group.

In general, I haven’t found people to be that interesting. Most people I know are excited about doing well, not about what they’re learning. I haven’t found much intersection between social and academic, which are both so important to me that I like them to intermingle.

Finally, I’m just not so sure about the West Coast, especially SoCal. I like uptight, stressed, rude people. Yes, I’m serious.

All in all, I think it’s a great school for many people. Most people come back and love it. I’m in a weird place with what I want right now. I think what I wrote can be very true, but it’s also not universal, so take it with a grain of salt. I could say many great things about the school too.

CranberryOrange,

Thanks for sharing your reasons! From what you say it seems like Pomona may not be the best fit for you. In terms of explaining to admissions officers why you want to transfer, I think your strongest reasons are the West Coast versus East Coast mentalities and the social atmosphere that you are looking for. I wish you good luck with the transferring process and hope you end up in a school that you can be happy at!!!

Thanks CO for your thoughtful post. My D2 is a fr at P right now, and while so far it’s a great place for her, she has noticed some of the things you discussed about the social scene.

Hello!

Has anyone gotten any sort of notification that Pomona received their applications? I got an email after I sent in the first short form, but nothing since turning in my full application.

Yeah, but they’re going to accept someone, so might as well try.
UCs and Pomona are incredibly different…
