Pomona v Brown, Neuroscience

On Tuesday, I was sure that I would be going to Pomona and I was incredibly excited. Then, yesterday, much to my surprise I was not only admitted to Brown, but I also received an aid package that was less than that offered by Pomona, but close enough that I can attend either school. So now I'm very jumbled in my head, and I must begin the process of working out where I want to go...
First, for those of you who are actually attending Pomona, can you give me some compelling reasons to go to Pomona over Brown? From what I've read, which is a fair amount, they both seem like schools where a good education is easily had, where the people are intelligent and fun, and the community is pretty strong.
Second, I'm looking at neuroscience as a possible major, and while I'm aware that my interests could change, it seems like a good idea to compare the departments as part of my decision process. Having looked at both departments, it looks like Brown has more courses that are specifically designated for neuroscience, but the overall programs look fairly comparable (at least to this layman's eyes). Any commentary on the professors, the courses, and the general feeling of the major would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Congratulations! Both schools are fantastic. You can’t really go wrong. My sister went to Brown and enjoyed it. The neuroscience program at Pomona is very good and very popular. Not sure about Brown’s. I think the biggest differences are size, location, and weather. The food at Pomona is also much better. I personally chose Pomona over Brown because of the smaller class sizes and the weather. Providence is a fun city, but it can get pretty dreary during the winter. I also feel as if I get more individual attention at Pomona than my sister ever got at Brown, but that does largely depend on the student. Pomona really goes out of its way to do things for us, though.

santeria, do you know of any neuroscience majors who feel that there aren’t enough neuroscience-specific courses offered? Thanks for the other thoughts, those are all very true and will probably be a deciding factor. I really do love California…

While unfortunately I don’t have time to write a long response, I thought I’d chime in quickly.

I’m a senior neuroscience/premed student and I cannot rave enough about the department. I absolutely love pretty much every neuro professor and my neuro classes have been by far my most interesting and engaging. The neuro profs are also great about letting undergrads do research with them (I’ve been doing research since sophomore year) and they actually really care about us as people. In fact, I have dinner/lunch with one of my professors all the time.

As for the lack of classes… unfortunately that is a little true. On the other hand, though, premeds are so busy finishing premed requirements that we wouldn’t be able to take these classes anyway! As for non-premeds, this lack of classes should be changing very soon. The Pomona neuro program just became a department this semester, so they’re about to completely rearrange the courses and add more/possibly get a new professor or two. I’m just sad I won’t be there to get to take advantage of it all!

I can’t say anything about neuro at Brown, but hopefully you’re getting some good responses on the Brown board. All I can say is that I love the neuro department at Pomona! I’m sure whereever you end up you’ll be happy. They’re both terrific schools.

Also - the joint science program at the other 5C’s have some amazing neuro classes - I wish I had taken more advantage of them. There are some absolutely brilliant professors working out of there.

That’s very encouraging reply. I imagine by the time I actually got into the bulk of the neuro major curriculum they’d have added some professors and courses, if your predictions come true. That alleviates that concern. Excellent. If you have time sometime later, I would love to hear more about the program from you, and perhaps you experience at the school. Thanks anyway though! Very helpful!

Of course! Feel free to PM me ay questions you have (that goes for anyone looking Pomona’s neuro program!)
I’ll do my best to get back to you ASAP!

What’s the grading curve like in premed courses at pomona?

How many pomona kids get into calif. Med schools per year–uc’s, usc etc.?

Latest accept rate to med. Schools?

Thanks
