Pomona vs Amherst vs WashU vs UChicago

I need help deciding. I plan to double major in economics (or in finance if I attend WashU) and either English or Spanish. I am considering going into IBanking. Neither weather nor social life is a factor. I would need to take out about 20k in loans to attend all but WashU, which will end up being about 45k cheaper than the others. WashU is in 4th place due to it's less than stellar location/placement in Ibanking, but the lower cost is keeping it in the running. How do these compare in terms of graduate business school placement, job prospects, grading, quality of education etc. Thanks.

University of Chicago is a great school and very well known.

45k total? Don’t worry about it. The alumni network at each of the other three is worth the 45K.People buy cars that cost that much, and don’t last as long as a college education.

Go to the best connected, best ranked for your career plan.

45K is not that big amount, so I would suggest UChicago. After all, you like to study economics.

you would need to take 20K in loans to go to Chicago? that’s it? Or is it 45K?

20k in loans.

If you rifle through the Chicago forum, you should find a recent post by a mom of a UChic kid interested in Wall Street. They’ve really enjoyed the opportunities provided and discovered that UChic is great for finance.

Maybe I’m missing something, but if it is 20K over 4 years, and not 20K in loans for every year, then your choice should come down to chicago or amherst.

Yeah is that 20K per year or total?

20k total over 4 years

^Oh then that’s not bad at all

Yeah that is not bad at all. I would go to Chicago in a heartbeat.

I agree–for $20,000 over four years, I would definitely take out the loans and go to one of the other three. Are you more interested in settling in the East, Midwest, or West?

Chicago, without any hesitation… UNLESS you’re not the Chicago sort of person. The cultures at these schools are not fungible! Each has a distinct personality. You already know the rankings (for econ/finance) … combined with your I-Banking aspiration (east coast centric, which is why I put Amherst above Pomona, but I would not do that with most other aspirations) –

Chicago
Amherst
Pomona
WashU

However, they REALLY are like dating four different people… getting engaged actually. How can you make this decision without getting the feel of each campus? If the culture of Amherst or Pomona lights your fire and inspires you to perform at a higher level, each could end with a better Ibanking result than Chicago, assuming its culture does not inspire you to the same degree.
