Looks like I struck a nerve here. The guy is who is so quick to talk smack about other schools, becomes unhinged if his is treated in the same manner. By the way, my son was accepted into Wesleyan and it took about 5 seconds for him to decide to go to CMC.

collegecrazy, I’m unclear why your choice has come down to Barnard and Pomona, period. They’re both great schools but seem to attract completely different kinds of kids. Both are very popular at my son’s high school: Barnard for brainy, artsy, politically conscious young women who seek an urban buzz and Pomona for smart, multifaceted, energetic, social kids who like the idea of access to California sunshine.

Aside from the ED choice, what other schools are on your list? If you’re attracted to Barnard you might also look at Wesleyan, Skidmore, Smith, Vassar, Bard. And conversely if you prefer the ambience of Pomona, look at Williams, Amherst, Hamilton, Kenyon, Bowdoin.

I’d also consider where you want to go with dance: is it just a serious extracurrilar or is it a potential career path? I’m not a dance expert but I’ve read enough posts on this site to know that there’s a whole subset of dance friendly schools. I don’t know that I’ve ever viewed Pomona in that light.

I can’t speak for Barnard or its relationship to Columbia but I will reflect on what my daughter (freshman) thinks of Pomona and Claremont.
Great school and she is academically challenged. She meets with her professors’ one on one almost weekly. Lovely feel to the campus, she has made many friends and everyone has been really helpful and welcoming. There are parties but if you are really serious about parties then HM or CMC is more accommodating. Scripps has the best food of all the colleges. All the colleges are different which is a good thing to have the diversity of 5 great schools and the varied range of classes you can take.
It truly is a great consortium. Don’t let some of the remarks above color your decision. Based on some of the threads existing on the Pomona board there is some past history here which is not pretty.
