For someone who might major in economics, international relations, with a Chinese minor, would you pick Pomona College or Johns Hopkins? Likely pre-law.
Is there any financial aid in play? If all things are equal, JH has more “clout” and likely has more connections for job placement.
Pomona is a beautiful area but a very small town feel if that matters.
I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “clout.” If you mean bigger alumni network and better name recognition for the average person on the street, then yes JHU has more “clout.” But in terms of job placement after law school, what matters is the choice of law school. Pomona ranks highly as a feeder school to the top law schools. Google top feeder schools for law schools, adjusted for size of enrollment. One of my kids graduated from Pomona with an econ degree and is starting a PhD program at an Ivy League school this Fall. Her classmates who graduated with econ degrees all had good outcomes, going into consulting/analyst positions, government, law school etc. Jobs for Economics Graduates | Pomona College in Claremont, California - Pomona College . It’s true that Claremont, where Pomona is located, has a nice small town feel. Its nickname is the “City of Trees and PhD’s.” It’s located in the suburbs, about 35 miles east of downtown LA.
I would pick Pomona in a heart beat.
Pomona fan here. JHU is a fantastic school, but I really like the five-college consortium. Claremont is a lovely college town with access to LA within 40 minutes.
Yep, that’s what I mean by “clout”
Pomona is beautiful and California can’t be beat for weather and all that goes with it.
“Fit” is always key and perhaps talking with students or professors in the programs might give a better feel for which might be better.
