Pomona Waitlist?

any international students who have been notified the final decision???

Has anyone been admitted from the wait-list recently?

@caveat: I doubt it. I’m also on the wait list, but my feeling is that most of the people who are going to be admitted from it already have been. I think this because they already know how many accepted their admission offer, and how many spots they have to fill. But, (hopefully) they will take one or two more of us off the waiting list during the summer as admits decide to take a gap year, etc or as other stuff comes up.

Why not just tell us. Why do they keep us hanging?

They keep us hanging to keep their options open. In the meantime I have deposited at NYU. Where have other waitlisted applicants deposited?

They keep you hanging because students they have admitted keep THEM hanging. If a student who has accepted Pomona gets off the waitlist at an Ivy, they may dump Pomona. Hence opening up a spot at Pomona. Or if someone (evilly) double deposited, and decides they will go to the other school and not Pomona… a spot opens up at Pomona. Or someone has a death in the family (causing a financial issue that can’t be resolved) or becomes ill themselves and can’t attend, a spot opens up.

Pomona has an interest in keeping a reasonable sized list of candidates on the wait list. They don’t know if the student not coming is male/female/what geography they are from/what sport they play/what major they might be interested in. To keep the class balanced, they like to have options for who they invite to take a spot when one opens up.

That said, waitlist at a school like Pomona is ALWAYS a crapshoot (much more so than admissions, your odds are much lower). It is a good idea to start making plans and love the school where you have deposited, because you very likely will be going there. And it will all turn out fine there, even if you can’t wear flipflops every day all year :)

I called Pomona and the reply was that international students will get an email in THIS WEEK notifying the decision. (or at least some useful info about Pomona’s general stance on this years waiting list)

I just got in off the waitlist!! Art Rodriguez gave me a call. He said they email me the financial aid later this week. I have to decide between there and Wesleyan, but I know I will be happy no matter where I go.

but isnt it the weekend now? still no email from pomona…

The rest of us are pretty much rejected.

This past Friday I received the following letter:

***"We hope that you haven’t grown too frustrated with us, but at this time I am writing to provide you with an update about the wait list. Currently, our freshman class is full, but there remains the possibility that a space may become available between now and June 30.

Should an opening occur, we would like to consider you for a space in the class. While I cannot guarantee you any outcome, our intention is that any and all action will be concluded by June 30. I have written to others on the wait list to inform them that we will not have a place for them at the College.

Please let us know of your intentions by using the enclosed card and reply by June 8th. We will be happy to answer any possible questions if you wish to call.

Sincerely,
Art D. Rodriguez
Acting Dean of Admissions"***

@ViscousVoyage:

Is it mail? How come I didn’t receive it.

@Ferriswheel

It did come in the mail.
I do live close to Pomona, so that may be why I received it so quickly.

@ViscousVoyage

Thank u very much for posting this!
_ It takes more than ten days for mailed letters to reach East Asia. I really don’t appreciate Pomona’s insistence on snail mail! (Slow, ineffective and wasting resources.) Anyway it’s virtually impossible for us in east asia to return the enclosed card AGAIN, by the stipulated deadline.

damn, I suppose I will settle for the uc system.

@ViscousVoyage

did you do anything to stand out in the waitlist process? i.e. did you send them something special, wrote a tear-inducing letter, etc.?

does anyone know how many people pomona is keeping on the waitlist?

@xjeyhx

I did. I sent them a letter of continued interest, as well as another letter of recommendation from a teacher I had this year.

@ViscousVoyage

are you planning to send in anything else? i’m trying to figure out what else to do here. i NEED pomona!

@xjeyhx

U can do that but it may not help. The AO once said dun flood them with additional materials since they had enough…
