Pomona's view on Standardized Tests?

Unfortunately for me Pomona is not an SAT/ACT optional school. How does Pomona weight standardized testing in the Admission process. I just got 186 on the PSAT (percentile of 90%) which probably isn't great for Pomona's standards especailly because they have around 66 National Merit Scholars or something..

Does anyone mind sharing their Stats? I know Pomona's average ACT is around a 31, but would a 28 or 29 really hurt someone badly in the admission process? Standardized testing can go die. Long live Essay tests!

I actually had pretty low SAT's for Pomona (680 English, 700 Math, 710 Writing)

I know the average for SAT's are quite a bit higher than that, so I guess that in my case-- no, it didn't hurt me too badly. However, Your EC's and essays will really have to make up for it.

There are no definite "cutoffs" for admissions, so good luck!

so...in theory, could someone with a 1680 SAT score gain admission to the school (cough that's what I got!) But, I think my extracurriculars/essay/transcript may make up for it (would they? could they!!)

Do remember that averages are just that--all of the scores averaged out. So, there were perfect scores and some far from perfect scores. Pomona will look at the complete package--you, not just your scores.

Good luck!

I agree with Little Mother. Pomona should look at the complete student. If all they want is one impressive number, then maybe you don't want them. Same goes for any school.

It is true that Pomona looks at the "whole person," but SAT scores aren't complete trash, either. (Not that I'm a huge defender of it, but still...) There is a general correlation between how well you score and how much you know/ how much you studied. For a top-notch academic school like Pomona, I imagine that they'd definately pay attention to the scores, even if those scores don't completely decide your app.

Fewer than 6% of enrolled students in the incoming class of 2010 had SAT scores below 600 on any one of the SAT tests. My impression is that anyone admitted to Pomona or another highly selective LAC with all SAT test scores below 600 would have to have a very compelling story, for example first generation college, non-native English speaking, highly impressive ECs, etc.

And.. how important is GPA? (sorry for bursting the main topic here).. I just have a really bad GPA and it's depressing the hell out of me.

my GPA would be considered 'lackluster' by Pomona standards, but ehrn it cme down to it, the rest of the application made up for it. You don't need a perfect GPA to get in here....but it sure helps
