Pondering Retakers Thread

Just got SATII results back.

Harsh. I scored sub 700 in math II (640) and chem (670)

So... I'm really going to have to re-take if I want to keep my Ivy dream alive.

This thread is for discussion among people like me! Lets devise a plan for all of us that will lead us to the promised land of 750+ next time!

A few questions to answer:

Will you retake your SATII's?
Does doing so hurt your chances with admissions?
How should I study, and when should I start?
How sad were you after you saw your score? haha (i was... very sad)
How many more test dates will there be before the early January deadline for Ivies?

Commence the self pity and moping!!!

Lol I like your tone

I guess I’m considering retaking the Math II, although with my horrible experience the first time I don’t even know if its worth retaking :frowning:

Also, I wanted to know if you retake a SATII does it override the older score in the eyes of admissions people or does it just look pathetic?

I don’t know if I should retake. I got mid-600s for my WH test but I don’t have time to retake it because I have SATs and other subject tests coming up :frowning:
I made a thread asking if the score would hurt me and no one’s giving me a straight answer so…
I almost cried when I saw my score and I couldn’t fall asleep and I’m like semi-depressed right now.
As for you, if you’re applying soon, I would give myself like a month or two to study and retake it. Good luck and sorry about your scores :frowning: I know how you feel. Maybe you should use Barron’s for Math II and another different prep book for chem.

I feel ya bneleh :frowning: i got up at 5 to get it over with, saw my scores, **** myself, and went back to sleep.

I didn’t actually **** myself.

But I could have.

I used PR for both chem and mathII. I really didn’t study for math as much as i studied for chem, because most of the math is just based on how proficiently you can manipulate equations and information, so i just studied formulas and hoped my preparation in math from school would help me with the rest…

It didn’t.

But my scores are only partially the fault of my books (as in, the 3 questions about the electron energies based on bohr’s model??? *** ETS!!). Other than that I think the books i used were good. but i think i really will invest in Barrons for the next time.

And I really want to take these tests another time, but I also want to take my SAT I again…

for the fourth time…

haha so will i have time to do all dis stuff???

also, @vvs9992003, I have been wondering the same thing! I’m gonna look like some wannabe Ivy level kid when I take this thing twice! But I have read on here that IMPROVEMENT is the most important thing. Colleges love to see “trends of improvement”, so if you can score significantly better on the same test the next time you take it, then TAKE IT! It would probably appear to a college that some miraculous intellectual transformation occurred if I could turn my HORRIBLE math and chem scores into 780+!!!

which, in reality, would absolutely not be the case. I’m dumb :(

At this point I really don’t know if I should even bother… I scored a 660 in Physics and 590 in Math II… its disgusting how bad I did. Also I scored a 740 in Spanish but I’m a native, fluent speaker so thats not much of an accomplishment >_>. I don’t understand why these standardized tests give me such a hard time. I was praying for at least a 700+ in physics so I could apply ED to Brown in the fall sending in Physics and Spanish (I knew I bombed math the day I took the exam) but I guess I can’t now. Plan B is going to consist of Studying all summer for SATs again in October (need to bring up that 1810) and then Subject Tests in November with December as my re-take date if I mess up again.

On a side note, any good recommendations for studying for Physics besides the PR book? PR book was able to bring me up from a 470 to a 660 so it did help but I need a little more of a push =/.

@redzerb: I feel like my hopes of going to an Ivy or a good private school like flew out the window. No joke. Sorry for my obnoxious self pity… but wow. The worst part is I was totally expecting a 720 or 730. I don’t know howwww the **** I got a mid-600s score, esp. b/c I actually checked my answers and concluded that I got like 25 wrong at most. That’s still above 700… I’m waiting for June 29th to see what went wrong.

But redzerb, please retake Math II. I have hope in you! You’re not dumb. From what I know, the PR prep book is “too easy,” and that’s according to my math teacher. Barron’s is pretty hard but it overprepares you… and if you can get like 650-680 on the model tests in there, you should be on your way to high 700s or an 800. Trust me, I would definitely retake Math II.

Is there a reason you’re taking your SAT I the 4th time? What’s your superscore or best score?

Redzerb, I agree completely with bneleh. PR for math 2 isn’t very helpful. I used Barrons for both math 1 and math 2 and in the practice tests i scored high 600’s. On the real thing I got 740 & 770 respectively. Barrons prepares you very well.

First take (as a sophomore):
1850 (620M, 620CR, 590W)
Second take (junior winter):
1950 (640M, 650CR, 650W)
Third take (junior spring):
2040 (680M, 750CR, 610W)

so, best: 2040 and super: 2080

you think these are borderline at ivies?

i only studied for the last one, and really not that much. and the first one was kind of a fluke because I come from a school where no one really cares about college (not even the guidance counselors. yeah.) so i didn’t take it seriously. I would have been better off not even taking it the first two times really. So taking it a fourth time is really like taking it a second time seriously. Feel me? lol

And yeah i will take the math II again. honestly it’s just a matter of putting in the hours of practice to perfect my skills. I’ll prolly take chem again too. that’s really my strong suit. i have no clue how i let it slip like that. I got 780 on the PR practice chem test. lol

I just feel decimated :(

Definitely gonna have to retake to keep my NYU chances on the line… Math Lvl II: 650 and US History: 620… I was more shocked than sad but then the disappointment captivated me… sooo upset right now

I’m in the exact same position. I did score 720 in World History, which was okay for me. But I scored 680 in Math 1 - thoroughly embarrassed. Math is my thing. I mean I was the only kid out of 200+ to ace the Algebra 2/Trigonometry Regents at our school. But apparently these Subject Tests aren’t for me (and I took level 1 too) grrrrr. From what I’ve read I should get the Barrons for Math 2 and study my butt off all summer and take it in the fall. I know I can do so much better. Gahhhh I’m so disappointed :[[[[

@redzerb: Sounds like your CR isn’t too bad. That’s supposedly the hardest section to improve so at least that part is okay for you. I would do lots and lots of practice problems for math- the best way to improve math is to practice. Writing- look up simple tips that might help you improve your MC, if you’re having trouble with that. I realized that a little goes a long way on the writing sections; for me, that’s how it is. For the essay, research the life stories and accomplishments of several people. For example, you might want to look into Oskar Schindler; you could twist his life story around to fit several prompts imo.

For Ivies, I think a 2200+ would give you a fair chance so I would work on getting good subject test scores and getting a really good SAT I score.

I feel pretty crappy right now too… I can’t believe my WH score was that bad.

I got a 520 in Literature, but a 720 in US History (what a difference, eh). Definitely re-taking Literature, as I was worn out from the US History test and couldn’t think, and it felt like I was just bubbling in random bubbles.

Previous scores:
Math 2 770
Bio E 740
Chem 720

June Score
Physics 750 (expecting 800)

I most likely will retake Physics in October for an 800.(and 2310 total sat iis)

A good idea or not?

Math II 770.

If i retake i only have one shot, and it’ll take away another chance to do well on SATI. I have October and November. And my first SAT was 1820 from May. :frowning:
Ahhh so undecided! >.<

@esthetique - definitely don’t waste the oct/nov sat opportunity on improving your mathii by 30 points, its not that big of a difference. you have much more room for improvement in your SAT I, so it would be worth more to you if you focused on that rather than math

I got a 690 on Latin today. What I’m going to do is take the Physics in November (only have Honors Physics, but taking C next year) and if I don’t do well, I’ll retake Latin in December. I already have one good score (800 on Math II), so if I can get 1, or not 2 more (only 2 if I want to apply to Georgetown for some reason) then that’ll be good.

I’m considering a retake with a 740 for Bio E.

740, first time taking Lit, no preparation whatsoever. Should I retake? (Incoming Sr aiming for Ivy-level and planning on applying early) Currently it’s my 2nd highest score. Got 800 in Math II. I dunno…

And also, retake Physics? 1st time, 700. 2nd time, 710. Worth a 3rd shot and study all summer for it? The problem is that I’ve only taken AP Physics C: Mech… and the teacher sucked also.

I gotta take Math II again, got a 650. Although I’m done with other subjects, chem 780, USH 770. I have to take Math II again for Caltech and MIT. Haha. This has gotten me to take the ACT in the fall though, so that should be good for me to see if I do better on that. If not I’ll just have to take the SAT I again.

EDIT: I’ll actually study for these too. ;)
