I am a lower middle class international student wanting to transfer to a undergrad business program (major: marketing) ....

I have applied to:
Wisconsin - Madison (will not be directly admitted to bschool though)
Indiana U - Bloomington (will not be directly admitted to bschool though)
USC
Washington - Seattle
NYU

Assuming that I will be admitted every one of them, where should I go?

of course I want better schools and in big cities but NYU and USC are too expensive ($50000/year ...)

Does it worth spending $15000 - $20000 more each year to go to NYU / USC than to state schools?

Do you think it is risky to go to Wisconsin / Indiana and work my butt off, trying to get into the B School?

Oh, I forgot that I am not doing finance (where most people do at NYU), so does going to NYU for the name and city worth $15000-$20000/year more than going to a state school?

And I want to do a MBA in the future, so I should save some money now right?

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Texas-Austin

Both have great Business schools, awesome Marketing departments, great locations and relatively low tuition.

In terms of Business education, UT-Austin's Business school, McCombs, is ranked among the top 10 at the undergraduate level. UNC-Chapel Hill's Business school, Kenan Flagler, is ranked among the top 10 at the undergraduate level.

UT-Austin closts about $20,000 (all costs included, such as room, board, books, health inssurance etc...) and UNC-Chapel Hill costs about $25,000 (all costs included).

Furthermore, UT-Austin gives financial aid to close to 65% of its international students, averaging $7,000/year. I am not sure if UNC-Chapel Hill gives aid to internations...but even then, at half the price of NYU or USC...and equal academic quality and reputation, I would say UNC is still a bargain, with or without aid. As far as Indiana...if you can save $20,000 by going there...again, it is worth it.

I went to Dartmouth and majored in history. I have seen two major trends in terms of B-school student bodies 1) Students at Ivies and other top schools who majored in anything and everything. For these people B-school is almost like finishing school, I have been shocked to see how many people I know are getting into top flight places. 2) Kids from lesser ranked places who were business majors. So you can go to Indiana and get in if you are at the top of your class.

I 100% echo Alexandre. You have until TONIGHT to apply to UNC-CH! You might be able to send the recs in late. its the best between the expensive privates and Indiana. I would also recommend Michigan as a top state school, as well as UT and UVA.

I think the "name" of the school which you graduate from is pretty important, as far as I know in my country. Indiana is good but nationally it is not that well-known though... that's why i decided to apply for UWM because it is popular there...

And how about Washington-Seattle? It is pretty well-known but I don't know if its B-School is famous or not ...

So I should go to Indiana even if all these 5 schools accept me then?

Maggie, you stole the words right out of my mouth - I was going to suggest U of Washington as a good alternative. I'd also add the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and the University of Minnesota to your list. All have excellent business programs. You might also want to take a look at San Diego State University in California - they have an excellent marketing department there and it would be about half the cost of the others.

the business program at UW (Seattle) has a good reputation...but if all you are you going to go for is a bachelor's and a good name to carry back to your home country...i wouldn't recommend it...

as I have mentioned, the reason why I didn't apply for UT is because what I have taken does not satisfy their requirements, and UNC-Chapel Hill requires students to be there for at least 1 semester and get a good GPA (you know, 3.5 at a CC may be easy, but hard at UNC)~

My thoughts on how "famous" the names of the univerisities are:

in US: NYU > Wis > USC > Washington > Indiana

in my country (Hong Kong): Wis > USC > Washington > Indiana (don't know if people really know NYU)

undergrad business: NYU > Indiana > USC > Wis > Washington

undergrad marketing: NYU > Indiana or USC > Wis or washington

just wondering....can't you get the same education @ HKU or even HKUST?

career prospects really depend on which field you're planning on entering after graduating... NYU would probably have the best prospects...just cuz of the name....and the number of opportunities in NYC....

I wanted to improve my English, so I chose to come to US.

Since I am majoring in marketing, I want to work in a merchandising company e.g. GAP, Macy's etc.

Does NYU give a substantially better career prospect? (subtantially means significant enough that worth $15000 - $20000 more each year in expenses)
