Hi, I'm an international student and i took the SAT and the TOEFL... for the SAT, i got 550CR/800M/540W...I know that my CR section is very low, but i took the TOEFL and I got an almost perfect score (1 wrong)....So i guess that really bad part is the writing section...Do u think it's going to affect me much? Are colleges going to really look at the writing section? (since it's only the first year that it's being tested...i heard some colleges won't even look at it)

Most colleges won't look at the Writing score this year. There are a few exceptions, like the University of California system. Where are you applying?

My guidance counclior went to a very large confrence with admissions reps from a very large number of schools (30 or so). When someone asked how the SAT writing score would be used, 2 said it would be used in admissions this year. Most of the others said they would use it either to figure out for next year or for placement, but most were hesitant to use the scores at all.

Although I agree that it won't be a critical factor, I think it would be a mistake to just forget about it. Many colleges may say that they don't look at the writing score, but lets face it: they will see it. Granted, having a lower writing score is better than having a lower CR score, but I think it could potentially make or break a borderline student.

The bottom line: don't kill yourself if you don't get an 800, but don't count on adcoms disregarding your score

JTC's advice is probably pretty good. Don't blow it off, but don't sweat it too much. Frankly, many of the admission people I've talked to said that they will completely disregard the writing score, but there has got to be some subconscious effect resulting a really low score.

BTW, another school that is using the Writing scores: Notre Dame

alright...by the way, does cornell require SAT 2 writing?? A page in the university's site says we need it but in another part it says we don't..

There is no more SAT II Writing: it is now included in the SAT I: Reasoning Test. It may have been an old admission requirement and Cornell may not have updated its site yet.

Good luck on your writing :)
