<p>It come's from "Soda pop" so the logical thing would be to shorten it to just "soda," much like one shortens a name to just the first word (for example, if someone is named John Smith, you call him John).</p>

<p>I generally call it by it's real name(i.e., coke is coke, mt. dew is mt. dew, root beer, etc.) I've lived in Alaska and in Texas and people say it all kinds of ways. People here generally call everything coke. And they'll say "fix me a sandwich."</p>

<p>In California, people say soda, I know a guy from Canada says Pop.
