Pop Songs

So now, more and more schools ask for a pop song in the repertoire. Do we know what schools want this and what schools do not?

Check the audition requirements on each program’s web site.

I’m aware of each school’s requirement. That was not my question. A lot of school ask for a pop song once you’re in the room. I know of a couple schools that do this. I just wanted to see what information other members had.

They didn’t do that last year when my D went through. Pretty much every program stayed right by their posted requirements.

Pace likes pop. There are others since so much Broadway is going poppy these days. I think it’s a lot like being asked for an additional monologue. It won’t happen to everyone but it’s always good when you are asked to do more.

I auditioned last year too. I was asked to do pop, as were many people I’ve spoken to.

Thank you so much! Pace was one of the schools I was thinking of. Some of my friends who have gotten accepted there led with their pop songs. I would think that’s not a great idea, but Pace might be the exception.

I think Texas State also asked some for a pop song if they had one.

On a similar subject, what is the general consensus on using songs from musicals where the songs are existing pop songs? Moving Out, Momma Mia, Rock of Ages, etc

My D auditioned for 14 schools last year live, plus one on tape, and not one of them asked for a pop song. So either things have changed, or it may not be as prevalent as you think. I would be happy to provide a list of schools that didn’t ask for one last year, if you want. :)

Texas State is the only one I’ve heard about so D is adding one to her repertoire for her upcoming audition there. We will let you know after she auditions if they actually ask for it but better safe than sorry.

Everyone should have a couple of pop songs in their binders just in case. There are schools that may ask “what else do you have?” and it is always better to be prepared in case they want a pop selection.

Must have changed, I guess. My D wasn’t asked for one at any of the 10 schools she auditioned for last year.

I would only have a pop song in your book if its something you do we’ll and will be comfortable with in an audition. Otherwise I would stick with what you do best. It is good to have a few extra selections in your book that you have prepared and don’t mind singing, just in case they want to hear more from you. On the flip side you may also want an art song or classical piece. OCU requires that as part of their audition. Other schools may want to hear something like that as Wellbutrin again, the biggest thing is to only have songs in your book that you do we’ll and that you don’t mind singing at an audition.

There is a facebook page called Unifieds…those people on there are reps from many of the schools and some are students who have gone through the process. They might be able to help.

I think one thing that may be muddying the waters here is what some are referring to as a “pop song.” A school may not ask for a “pop song” per se. When I think of “pop song,” I think of a pop song that is not from the MT repertoire. HOWEVER, I think many schools like to hear a legit traditional sort of MT song AND a more contemporary musical theater song. The latter would actually come from a musical and may have a pop sound, or at least a more contemporary sound. I think it is good to have a song like that. It can’t hurt to have a song in your book also that is a pop song that is not from a musical. But a pop-ish contemporary style song actually from a musical would be even better to have for a college audition.

I can’t find the Unifieds fb page. Is it just called Unifieds?
thx

The Unified

I can’t find it either. I checked The Unified and got a band!

We like hearing pop/rock songs at Shenandoah. Close to 50% of professional auditions ask for pop/rock songs and we like to see if the students excel in that area or are at least willing to try.

Voice teacher do you put on your audition requirements that students should have such a sing prepared? If not that does not seem fair.
